I just got my new Pronto RU950. I have set the backlight to 3 seconds and the LCD timeout to 15 seconds (I am trying to conserve the battery life). The backlight stays on for the full duration of the LCD timeout thus draining the battery. I read the review from Daniel Tonks and it suggests the timeouts should work separatly. Any ideas what I can checkout to fix my problem?

Have you got the latest firmware?
Backlight timeout works fine on my 950 (light 5 sec, LCD 7 sec, lightsensor "completely left").

Hi There.
I downloaded the latest firmware and now get the additional SETUP Activation screen for firm or cursor keys. I have set them for beep. Pressing the firm key light the screen but blank so that doesn't save battery life. I am interested that you set the lightsensor to the left. Does that stop the backlight coming on apart from pressing the contrast button?
I sent an email outlining this problem to the Philips Pronto team but have not had any reply yet.

Yep, it never lights up, except pressing the backlight button or with the special action "backlight".

Hi, I tried the setting to the far left and the LCD and backlight now change in accordance with the times set on the settings screen. It is just a pity that the light sensor does not do it's job correctly. After all it only needs to simulate pressing the activate button if the light level is below that set on the scale. My old RU890 didn't do it correctly either although I think the US version did. So far the supplied set of batteries only lasted 8 days so saving on the time the backlight is on seems really necessary.

AFAIR former Firwares did that correctly.
But the light-level-steps aren't fine enough for me, so i never really tested it.

Huh? Mine last up to 8 WEEKs without explicit light-saving.
Try Vartas or Panasonics.
