Hi all,

there have been several threads on people breaking their screens on their TSU 3000 and not being able to get replacements for them economically. I also happen to be in this situation with a pronto that was only 2 weeks old.

A colleague who knew of my misfortune late last year happened to stumble on somebody on ebay who sold them. I bought both that were listed at the time USD$50 each plus postage, and had no competitive bids. I bought both because I thought this was the one and only time these things were up for sale and with my kids it may well happen again. I just looked on ebay again and to my suprise the same seller has got another 2 up for sale. have a look at [Link: stores.ebay.com.au]

Since he listed a couple more so soon after the other two I would not be suprised if he had more stock for sale, but considering how rare it is to find them for sale it may not be worth taking that chance.

Anyway, I expect to receive mine in the next couple of days and will post my experiences.

Just an update,

I just received both screens today. They were really well packed and made it over here to Australia with no problems. I could have dropped the box from 2 metres high and they would have been OK.

Upon inspection of the two screens they do indeed appear to be new. They still have the plastic covering the screens and the metal frame is untouched. If you tried to remove one of these screens from your pronto you would have seen that the metal frame has 4 tabs which go through holes in the PCB which are then bent so they stay fixed, and are then soldered on. If these were not new I would have seen indicators in the metal tabs.

Anyway I hope to replace my screen later tonight when I get home and post another update.

BTW, now that the auction for the last 2 has finished the ebay seller has another one listed. My guess is that this is last one (otherwise another 2 would have been listed based on the past).

OK I've just installed my new screen and it works perfectly. All that time I invested in programming the remote to get my "perfect configuration", only to get a days worth of use before the screen broke, is now just a distant memory.

I throughly recommend the seller and the product for sale. I can't be sure how many more the seller has for sale, but I wouldn't be suprised if the one currently listed is the last one.

BTW, I got my previous post wrong, the screen has 3 metal tabs that you bend to fix in place, and two of them need to be soldered down.

Thanks for the tip Z. After months of searching with no luck, your thread was gold.

I didn't manage to bid for a new one on E-bay but Mike at ESR hooked me up with a slightly shop worn one for US$40 and shipped it to NZ in three days. I think he only had one other one left.

I couldn't open my RC5400 initially but I got the service manual from the web and the changeover of the screen was dead simple and it now works like a dream. A 9500 in the lounge and now a 5400 in the bedroom - beautiful!

Cheers
Adam
