It seems that version 2.1.7 has been posted to Philips website. I've downloaded but haven't had a chance to play with it. Anyone have any idea what enhancements/fixes are included (the "what's new" link does not appear to work).

I've emailed the Pronto Team lead as to what's in the release. For now, I can verify that the Installer Changed such that it does an upgrade and does NOT force an uninstall/reinstall.

msfeinstein, please edit your first post and change the subject line to add Version 2.1.7 such that we can use this thread for issues related to this version.

Thanks bunches.

Lyndel

This is merely an installer upgrade/fix. The program itself is the same.

This version apparently has 2 problems (bugs?).

1.5 days ago I reformated my hard drive on my Gateway compuer which now has the very latest version of SP2 of Windows XP. (Got rid of nasty alfacleaner adware and cleaned up computer. ) Computer is running faster than before alfacleaner got on it. All programs appear to work fine except for problems with Pronto software. Tonight I Installed ProntoProEdit NG 2.1.7. It installed fine without any error messages. Opened a pcf file and did some editing.

Problems (Bugs?).
1. While revising label for a button, I clicked on the pause symbol (in the label tab of button properties window) to get the alphabet consisting of symbols for pause, play, etc. When I clicked on the play symbol to insert that symbol into my label, the symbol for play in the keypad changed to a number 3. No character was input into my label. All other symbol character labels for keys remained as symbols. (I was still in the symbol keyboard.) I clicked on another key symbol, and the number 3 changed back to the play symbol. I was then able to insert the play symbol into my label. I observe that the play symbol is in the same keyboard position as 3 is in the regular character keyboard. Have not been able to replicate the strange symbol switch.

2. Installer Problem?. When I finished editing, I connected Pronto 7000 to USB port. Windows said it had found new hardware and needed to install it. Windows then asked for permission to search the internet. i gave permission. Windows then said that a file was missing, "Pronto2g.sys". I had to do a search on my hard drive to find that that file was already in 3 places:

Windows\system32\drivers

C:\Program Files\Philips\ProntoProEdit NG\Drivers\Win2KXPME\

and C:\Program Files\Philips\ProntoProEdit NG\Drivers\Win98SE

Because the Win98 file was smaller than the other 2, I ruled it out. The other 2 were the same size. I browsed the Windows missing file window to the Pronto2g.sys file in
C:\Program Files\Philips\ProntoProEdit NG\Drivers\Win2KXPME\.

Windows then reported the device was installed. I was then able to download my modified file into the Pronto 7000.

Apparently the installer has a new problem. And the label tab of the character keyboard might have problems. Have never seen the play symbol on that keyboard change to the number 3 in previous software. I suspect that more than the installer was changed in the new edit software.

Best wishes, Gary.

Gary, you can suspect, but the pronto team has confirmed the installer was all that was to be changed.

The USB driver issue is a known issue and has been discussed by me in great detail previously. Search for +Potential +USB +Issues. FYI, I, too had to reinstall the driver. All you had to do was to select the WinXPME driver as you did an you are off to the races.

For the other issue, I have to ask... Did you reboot following install? If you can reproduce the problem and list the steps exactly, I'd love to have the list of steps to see if I can repro as well. If so, I will then escalate the issue.

Thanks,
Lyndel

I think there may be some software differences as well.

Ignore the following: >>>>
I thought that previously if Font8 was selected, the buttons to allow users to place symbols were disabled. From what I can tell now, the buttons to select symbols pages are enabled and if clicked, immediately change the font size to 10.
<<<<<

Update: The above statement is incorrect please ignore. You can select the play or other symbols, but when you do, the font size changes to 10. This test was performed on 2.1.4 as well so, no changes to this functionality were made.

Dear Lyndel

I had indeed some time ago read your very clear instructions on the USB problem when installing. In fact I had used those excellent instructions to install an earlier version, taking care of the USB problem as in the instructions. But my belief when I installed the current version was that all USB problems had been fixed.

I've been busy on some other projects and had not looked at the forum for several weeks. When alfacleaner nudged me to reformat my hard drive, I then looked at the Philips site to see if a more current editor had come out. When I found it had, I downloaded it. The Philips page had items on which one was supposed to click to find out what changes were made in the new software. But when I clicked, the Philips server reported that it had internal errors. So I assumed that recent forum mention of changes in the installer meant the USB problem was fixed along with the upgrade thing.--Assuming that Philips would want to fix all known errors. Thus my report on the missing file message.

If strange behavior such as the number 3 problem occur, I'll post a message. But last night when I modified my pcf into its current form, there were no problems after the intial 3 one. It will be interesting to see if other users encounter problems similar the the 3 one.

Lyndel, many thanks for all the time and assistance you have provided me and other users of Pronto and Pronto software. Best wishes, Gary.

Gary, I'm also having a problem and I'm trying to regression test with 2.1.4. If I can confirm it is a problem, I'll escalate to the prontoteam. My intent was not to beat you up. I can see that my post came across as kind of "snooty" but that was not my intent at all.

When we say the Installer was fixed, that is in regard to not forcing one to uninstall prior to installing. The software simply overlays the previous version. I too, have had problems with the USB driver getting uninstalled in this release. It has happened one time and I can't reproduce the problem readily.

There is a software change. Just don't know what it contains. The ProntoProEdit NG.exe file increased in size by almost 4K and the Help file increased as well.

As for the 8/10 point & symbols thing, previously just clicking to look at one of the symbol keyboards would automatically bump the font size from 8 to 10 point (since there is no symbol set for 8 point); I suggested instead having it so that the font size only bumped up when a symbol was actually used.

A similar problem occured when copying button properties from one to another, where copying 8 point text formatting onto a button with symbols would maintain the font size at 8 and then cause the symbols to drop out when downloaded.
