Hi all, I'm looking at repairing a RU950 (TS3000), which has a broken screen - well touchscreen to be precise - its the usual contact problem... Whilst I had it open I see the EL panel is partly detached from the LCD glass, (probably done by previous muppet who didn't know what he was doing...), and I'm wondering about using LED's to light screen instead of EL panel - how hard is it to do? and how good a light dispersal do you get? I think this is probably a question more for Ossocao - since I think he has done this?
Thanks for any advice! Joe
P.S. Anyone know anywhere to get replacement SMD push button switches for the Pronto (Contrast button) - since he also broke that :-)

Well, TSU3000 with a touchscreen that works on the top 1/4, but the farther down you go...the further below the icon you must press.
Its like this. Devide the sections into 4 from top to bottom.
top 1 works #2 ok, but you have to touch just below the icon #3 you need almost 1 cm below to work (1/3") #4 toast!
confused? Me too!

confused? Me too! You have the touchscreen problem, eventually It will stop working completely. Solution: new touchscreen or replace the ribon for wires using a silver based glue,

P.S. Anyone know anywhere to get replacement SMD push button switches for the Pronto (Contrast button) - since he also broke that :-) I have the buttons you need, send me an e-mail. Well the mod is very hard to do. Best whould be to sell yours 3000 and get a 3500 in e-bay. I made, I think, 5 mods and stopped. You will need a Led Panel from a broken screen (ipaqs). The leds on those are in serial you will have to mod to parallel. The major problem is space, the 3000 was not made to recive a 2mm panel under the screen. You will have to move the cristal to make room and use a dreamel on the hard buttons that goes under the LCD. You will also need a photovoltaic relay to make it work, 2 resistors and 4 diods. The relay will be activated by the old EL points and the energy to the LEds will come direct from the bateries. The result of this mode is an identical 3500 illumination. Thruth is that I made some because I an Engineer and like those kind of crazyness. :-) It's not a problem if your EL panel got loose. The structure of the hard keys around the screen will keep it in place.

Hi All,
I've had my RU950 for about 4 years and am now experiencing the same problems as everyone else! It started with the screen losing calibration and I had to press to the right of each button to get it to work. I looked at this thread and opened up my unit to see if the ribbon cable was still attached. It looked o.k. but pushed on the four contacts anyway just to be sure - didn't penetrate the ribbon material though. Reassembled the unit and the same problem persisted. I went away for a few days and have just been told by the wife that the screen has completely frozen now and won't work.
I've contacted Philips in the UK about a repair but this will cost a minimum of £90 plus delivery! They appeared to know nothing about the problem!
I'd like to try and fix the unit myself and will open it up again.
Has anyone successfully had theirs repaired by Philips, and if so, what did it cost?
Thanks for any help you can give.

You don´t need to unsolder the LCD from the main board to try this fix. The contacts people are talking about are indeed the points where the ribon cable of the touchscreen touchs the glass panel.
The problem in your remote is that the ribon showed in your first picture, loses their contact at the point that it touch the glass. The ribon is gluded there and after some time this contact get lost. The ribon is a 4 way flat and touch the glass in four points. You can try perfurate the ribon in each contact where it touch the glass and see if the contact is restored.
Sometimes just puting some pressure on it solved the problem. Some guys used the expression "to clean" the contacts but they are only making pressure on them, since the real contact is under the ribon, betwen the ribon and the glass. Perfurate the ribon on the 4 contact points make the conductor cupper bends and sometimes it makes the contact touch the glass again. Thanks for the reply Before you answer me, I unsolder the LCD from the main board to see the back of the LCD So i removed the two ribons cables from the mainboard but when I replug the cables, the LCd screen was black ... Perfurate the ribbon was a great idea because the touch screen works again ... but now i can see nothing on the LCd screen ... Wich is the ref if I need to replace the LCD screen ?? Someone can give links to me ? thanks

Thanks for any help you can give. For 90.00 pounds you can get an used working unit in e-bay. Philips do know about this problem as you can see in the post #80 of this thread but they dicided to ignore it and charge to repair.

thanks Thats why I don't recomend to take the screen out, after so many years the ribon is molded to the conector. I'm shure You don't have an LCD damaged just a bad contact. Try to clean the ribon, if this does not work take a sisors and cut 1mm of the ribon, this will make the contact in another point in the conductor. You cannot find this LCD to buy, the only fix for the image part is to send the remote to Philis and get a refub back.

Ok, thanks for the info Ossocao - think the LED option is just too involved, and I don't think I can be bothered... Will email you about the SMD switch.
Thanks

Well I tried the PIN method and my LCD is back up and running perfectly. All it needed was a couple of pin holes in the contacts and a spray of contact cleaner for good measure.
Calibration perfect and unit has performed fine for the last couple of days.
Thanks to all for taking the time to reply and for those advising on the solution.

Having the same "no response" issue with my 3000. Took it apart and sprayed in contact cleaner as well as rubbing the ribbon cable HARD to try and re-establish contact. Worked until I put it back together and then nothing, back to not being able to calibrate.
The "pin" method you speak of - are you really poking through the ribbon cable with a pin? How long has this fix typically lasted. I'm guessing there is no other fix short of soldering in wires?!?

What about to read the hole thread? All your responses is already here. And a contact cleaner does not make any effect since you cannot access gluded contacts.

Maybe since this seems to be an issue many are having we could cut the pertinent parts of this thread out and make them sticky so someone doesn't have to read 17 pages to find the ONE post that has the solution buried somewhere in it with some vague reference to what actually worked...

Well you can ask Daniel that is the owner of RC, but as you can see none of the heads of RC wrote in this thread, this problem Philips decided to ignore (because of $$).
