Moved to the TSU3000 found that my 9 pin laptop serial port no longer in the scheme of things. I have searched this forum and can't find any references. Is anyone using their old laptop/desktop with a db9 to usb adapter? I have an I/O gear device that I am using with an MX700 but it works in the other direction.

I dont believe I have ever come across a RS-232 to USB adapter. If you have an available PCMCIA slot, you can add a USB card to your laptop to resolve this issue though.

Right. 98 doesn't officially support USB 1.1, but 98SE and better does (I'd honestly go right up to XP).

I have a win 98 pc, with usb built in.

But if I was running win 98 se, how can I tell? I've looked every where on this pc, software and hardware. And it says nothing about se.

Right click "My Computer" and select Properties. On the General tab at the top right it will say
"Microsoft Windows 98" on the first line under System.
The second line will say "Second Edition" and the third line will be a build number. Mine is 4.10.2222A

Well, mine only has two lines. Windows 98 being the first. And the second being 4.10.1998

So I guess that I am one of the lucky people to have usb built into a win 98 pc???

Even though you have USB on a Windows 98 system, it still doesn't mean that it fully supports the USB 1.1 standard. You could even format the HD and load a copy of Win 95 with the USB Supplemental patch and it would run USB devices, but wouldn't be able to handle a device that needs the 1.1 standard drivers. So USB has been around and working since Win 95, just not fully supportive as the standard didn't happen when 95 or 98 was out. 98SE was after the standard and included the needed fixes. And since Microsoft thought that everyone should be upgrading because they released a new OS, they didn't release any patches for 95 or 98 to bring it up to the standard.

From Windows 98SE and up, Windows included the 1.1 drivers. Basically Windows 98SE was a new OS, not just a bunch of updates that you could download.

You can also think of it this way, Windows XP (pre Service Pack 1) doesn't support USB 2.0 by default. You can either use the drivers that came with the 2.0 card, or you can get Service Pack 1 with the built in support. The same holds true for 98 vs. 98SE, except that 98 is stupid and you can't load 1.1 drivers as the OS just doesn't support it.

And no, you don't have Windows 98SE, you have just plain old Windows 98.

I've managed to find and perform the se upgrade. I've located a pcmcia usb card so I'll report back later after all is working. I am using a 266 Dell Latitude so I don't think XP would be the right move for me.

Windows 2000 would work on the laptop, but I would only recommend it with at least 256 MB RAM with that slow of a processor.

Win98SE it most likely the right choice, but if you want a newer OS, Windows 2000 would work.
