After I downloaded the latest firmware release for the TSU3000 (TSU3000__V2.0.38.1.zip), the backlight and light sensor started working together correctly. Hopefully that will fix it for good.

i've noticed that no matter how much light or what settings i change, the backlight always comes on. Although it does turn off before the LCD when the times are set differently on both, it doesn't need to always come on.

They do have a light sensor. It's not a very good one though. Most people find it to "work" when they place the remote in sunlight. I my self have not seen a 3000 so I don't know how it works. However I've had a ts-1000 which did have a light sensor it it, and it was very good as what light condidtion and stuff like that.

This may be fixed in a firmware update. However, if this is a phyiscal problem, then you will NEED to fill out the warrenty card, so that Philips can contact you to fix it.

Even sitting it in front of the window during a sunny day, rare here in the NW i know, but i did get one to test it recently, the back light still comes on. Not sure if it just doesn't work, or if it knows it's in the Pac NW and it might as well just assume it's dark and rainy out.

If you were to press the backlight button on the side. Then no matter how bright the light is, the backlight will turn on. Even on the ts-1000, it will turn on. However, it should turn off after a second or two.

For this example, I am using my memory from my ts-1000.....

If I had the backlight setting for 3 seconds, LCD for 10 seconds.

I would place the remote in a high light area. Press the back light button, the back light will turn on for a second, then turn off.

However, if the ambeant light was "normal" and I would press the back light button, the back light will stay on for the 3 seconds in which I have the setting for.

If the room was dark, then it will stay on for the 10 seconds that the LCD was on for.

If however, I would touch the display instead of the backlight button. The back light will not turn on if the light was very bright. If the light was normal, then it might turn on, or it might not. If dark, then yes it will turn on for the whole 10 seconds.

I had this problem when I first got my 3000. I've had it for about two weeks now and the light sensor works fine (as well as it could). For some reason, it did not active until I downloaded a new pcf file to my 3000. Ever since, it works.

Somebody posted earlier a great tip that it will not work if you place it directly underneath a lamp (mine is a halogen). I have tested and this is true. However, sitting in my room which has a 100w normal bulb on the ceiling definitely trigured the activation. Covering the light sensor with my hand turned on the backlight. Removing my hand turned the backlight off.

Never mind. I ran the firmware updater in TSU3000__V2.0.38.zip (even though it was already showing the current version installed) and now the backlight and light sensor are working correctly together. Sorry for the false alarm. But based on my past experience with the TSU2000, I thought this was deja vu all over again.
