As I mull the idea of upgrading my 2000 to a 3000, I have a question. I have downloaded PENG to see if there is anything I can do with the new remote. One thing I notice is that I can set a device to be RF control, allowing X-10 device control. Yet, I keep hearing that you need to buy the optional RF extender to get this to work. Then, there's the "control out of sight" remark that makes me think this is just for controlling audio components in other rooms. If the RF extender is needed to control any RF device, how is this any better than having to get a IR/RF converter to do X-10 on a 2000?

The remote can send an RF signal out (it is a different frequency than what X10 uses and not designed to control x10 directly). The RF that the remote sends out is received by the optional RF receiver which then converts the RF back into IR to control your equipment. This way you can take your remote about anywhere in your house and control equipment.

For your X10 you will still need an IR/RF converter to control the X10 devices.

Thanks man. Exactly what I thought. Not that it's a show-stopper, just would have been a nice feature.

As Archer said an ir to x10 converter is needed unless you make an rf to rf converter to convert the rf signals from the pronto (418mhz) to the x10 frequency (310mhz).
[Link: laser.com] has a ton of good rf info including plans for the rf to rf converter.
