Is there any software out there that can be used on either a laptop or a computer with an infered interface that will preform the tasks of the various remotes I have lying about my lounge at the moment?

My goal is to be able to remotly manage my computer from wearever and preform task such as setting the vidoe recorder, turing on the air conditioning or central heating and control my home theater system.

Yes, but not commercially available.

I wrote just such a system and use it for my HT. It runs on an IBM A21 Laptop (very quiet and looks good. Receives IR through a simple $45 IR receiver that receives and decodes NEC protocols. I use a Pronto loaded with NEC protocols to control the PC. The IR output is the Nirvis Slinke since it also handles Sony S-link and comes with a full app for controlling CD mega changers. The Slink-e drives a Xantech network to distribute the IR to components. The PC also drives an X-10 system using a CM11A to control all lighting, relys, etc.

If you are interested in what I have done, drop me an email. I have an article that was piblished in Home Automator and elsewhere describing the system.

Actually I thought there were quite a few commercially available applications, including this one that I currently use. Although I am just at the beggining stages with it, it can do quite a bit, including the above. [Link: csi3.com].

I use HomeSeer which is mainly for X-10 (power line control of on/off and lights) rather than IR.

It DOES have IR capability and is an amazing bit of software for the price. I got a credit card JUST to buy it for the US this year (I'm 45 now!).

It allows for a few IR aware devices the one I use is from Concept UK and attaches to the parallel port but there are other ones (SLink-e allows zoning directly I think).

It allows easy voice control (even via a phone) includes a web server (for lucky people with permanent access - took about 1 minute from the first device), capability to control via email.

It's just great.

I looked at Home Vision and HAL2000 but this beats them - if only because you can get it working easily and program it more and more (Java, Perl and VBScript).

I didn't like having to learn (another) esoteric language to make events so I didn't like Home Vision and HAL looked like it was money hungry from the word go.

Their web site is www.keware.com

I get NOTHING out of this, but I would suggest you look at this and download the one month trial.

From what I've learnt so far Girder seems to be the best software for converting IR commands into PC commands.

I also purchased a cheap IR receiver called irman which plugs into a com port from
www.evation.com

I'm just in the process of setting it up myself for playing DVDs via the PC but from what I've read it can do pretty much anything.
