Al:

Did you have to cut any openings in the battery compartment to get your 'L' screen to fit ? I understand you had to do a bit of cutting on the plastic screen bezel which holds the panel in to clear some caps.

How would you say the 'L' compares to the other screens ? Is it brighter with better contrast ? Does the contrast drift and need adjustment frequently ? What color is the backlight, aqua, or green ? Thanks for your answers.

I was still unsuccessful in getting the 'A' rev screen to work in my Pronto. I carefully did some surgery tonight and installed the 'A' screen again, being sure it was not being pinched on any of the surface mount components. Basically, I just didn't screw the thing back together again, and left everything in there loose so I could test the theory that the 'A' panel didn't work because of undue pressure on the L1 inductor and Cx bank of caps.

No go.. still the same vertical grey bars.. :-(

I am considering ordering one of the 'L' rev screens if you didn't have to cut the battery compartment, and if the improvement was worth it. Thanks!

Jon, I only had to cut a bit of the bezel where they added some compenents. The L1 cap was not a problem for Me and I did not have to cut into the battery comartment (but I had the silver pronto and I don't know if the internal plastic is different from the black/grey Pronto).

I am very happy with the new screen. The contrast is good and does not dift at all. I set the contrast once and never had to touch it since. I cannot comment on brightness since I been Prontoless for a while, but I am very happy with the brightness of the screen.

Over the holidays my Prono experienced the cracked screen of death. I was able to order and install a G revision from Frontier Electronics. I have not seen a large difference in brightness or sharpness, but the new G Rev is much more Touch Sensitive than my original Pronto. One difference that has been noticed. When I touch the screen to 'wake-up' the pronto the screen flashes black before the display appears. I don't think it is anything to worry about but I will keep you all posted.

I called Fernando at Earth and he told me that people were having big problems with the "A" model of replacement. I'm impressed that he didn't just sell one to me and let me sort it out, but actually gave me useful information!

So it appears that we want the "B" version, but no one has that, correct? So what about the "L" or the "G"? What is the difference? The fact that I'm even considering this is incredible to me (i'm a software guy, not a hardware guy) and when people start talking about cutting and shaving, I get really really scared!

The jury seems out on which to buy, or am I just not correctly reading between the lines?

Mike,

The answer your question is... I don't know.. :)

I tried the 'A' rev from Fernando, and just recently got an RMA and sent it back. I simply could not get rid of those gray, vertical lines I mentioned earlier.

I do actually have a 'B' revision screen already in my Pronto. It is what it came with, and it works just fine.

I am hearing that the 'L' revision screen seems to work with only a minor bit of cutting. That said, I am still reluctant to buy another screen and try it. I wish someone had the ability to get screen shots with a good digicam of the differences between the 'G' or 'L' screen and the older ones like the A's, B's, etc...dunno... Al, any takers ?! :)

Oddly enough, my Pronto is still working perfectly with its new revision A panel from Earth. It originally had rev B panel before its sad meeting with a foot. I wonder why the rev A panel only seems to work with some Prontos.

Can you supply any contact details for Frontier Electronics (including which
country they are located in)?

I would also be interested to know what your replacement screen cost.

I am struggling to find a supplier.

So, I'm curious after all this. I have a TSU2000 and I would rate the screen as only fair. Can anyone who replaced their TSU2000 screen tell us whether there was a noticeable improvement?

I just bought a second Pronto (european version).

Thanks

I was able to swap out a screen from an old RC5000 (with the light sensor) into my new RC5000i. The part no was UG24U01WGHT3B which is the screen that everybody is after. I swapped out both screens in 1/2 hour - it was very easy.
I immediately noticed that the UG24U01WGHT3B screen displays fonts and images much sharper. But, comparing both screens side-by-side, the UG24U01WGHT3B LCD is a bit darker than the new ones - but this is not a problem with the backlight turned on. The backlight is a bright green, which appears to be brighter than the blue backlight of the new screens.
I also noticed that after using the UG24U01WGHT3B screen for about 10 min, the contrast did drift considerably and the screen got darker. I had to use the contrast wheel in order to see my small icons. But contrast didn't drift nearly as much as the new screens which can become quite unusable when displaying small navigational icons.
I also noticed that the UG24U01WGHT3B screen was not as sensitive to the touch as the new screens. Buttons did not respond by simply touching them as my RC5000i screen did. They would respond if I tapped them with my finger nail. Maybe this was a problem with this screen because it was old - I don't know. From this perspective I prefer the sensitivity of the new screens.

Overall, I'd say the UG24U01WGHT3B screens are much better than the new RC5000i screens when it comes to sharpness and the backlight. But not as good as the new screens when it comes to screen brightness without the backlight turned on. They are only marginally better when it comes to contrast drift. With the kind of bucks we are spending on these devices there better NOT be ANY contrast drift! (or maybe not as much that would require the use of the contrast wheel).

Hmm... well seeing as how my Pronto already *has* the B. Revision screen, I might as well just keep it !

Not having any other Prontos to compare it to, I just assumed mine probably had one of the lesser quality screens. After monkeying around with the A Rev. screens and such, I gave up, and put my B Rev. back in. Works fine ever since.. I think I'll quit chasing this one.. at least my fonts and graphics are nice and sharp.. although I guess my biggest complaint is the lack of screen brightness.. oh well... :-)

I screwed up my silver Pronto screen a little while back and though I was screwed until I found this thread. I have since ordered the new screen from Earth Computer Technologies and installed it. For those of you who have the European Model and can't seem to find the right part number feel free to visit my site at http://www.joey6p.com and go under "DIY Projects" and then "Pronto Repair". It gives the part number I ordered from them as well as a gallery of pictures to assist people in repairing their Pronto screens. I tried to make it as indepth as possible :) Hope this helps a few of you out :)

I hate to sound like a broken record, but has anyone found a source for the "B" screens for a US-model Pronto? The link near the top of the first page of this thread yields a "not found" error.

Thanks ;)

Here is another source for the pronto replacement display: [Link: sdiamerica.com]

Try the Voyager Electronics distributor, ask for Adam
763-571-2139
they have the UG24U01WGHT3G screen (they told me Samsung no longer makes ver B screen) and it is a drop in replacement for the B version. It is supossed to be the same green display just with an added cache. They sell it for $78.50 + ship I ordered one we will see!
