Hi Jon,

I had the exact same experiance as you. I asked for a Rev G and got a Rev A LCD. I installed it with little problem and when I was through the screen had the same issue you described with the lines on the left and right edge of the screen. The screen's quality does not seem as good as my original screen. I have an old pronto from back when the light sensor stll worked.

The good news is the backlight works after the procedure. I am not really sure what my next move is. I feel like I should talk to the place I orded them from and get the correct replacement. The problem with that is I don't have anyplace to ship it too. I won't be home to sign for anything and I can't send it to work because we are in the process of moving buildings and I don't know the switch over date yet.

Thanks,

Will

Thanks for posting your experience! I was just sitting here at work looking at my LCD panel wondering what I should do. Send it back for a refund, or attempt to get the G revision of the screen ?!

It is good to know I was not alone with the vertical bar problem. At least it shows there is some incompatibility between the Rev A. screen and the Pronto. The odds are that both of our screens are not defective, rather there is something incompatible.

I think I will give Earth Computer Tech a call and see if they can track me down a Rev. G screen. Then again, I'm not too thrilled with having to make the 5mm cutouts in the screen holder in order for the screen to fit. Thanks !

I am very interested in hearing how it turns out for you. I am still undecided in what I want to do. I think the key for me will be deciding what I want to do with the remote, I have been using the RTI Theater Touch instead.

I did not have any problems making the cuts on the screen holder or the battery case. Neither are visible from the outside of the case and I do not think it signifigantly changed the structural stability either. The cuts were very easy to make with an exacto knife.

I have a couple of pictures at [Link: madravings.com] that show where I made the cuts. I have a lame digital camera so they did not come out great, but you still get the idea.

Hmmm... you had to make the cuts with the Rev A. screen ? I didn't know that was necessary. From Aaron's description, it was the Rev. G screen that needed the cutouts for some other electronic components. Then again, maybe I had my Rev. A crunched in there more than I should have ?

Dunno.. it seemed to fit fine for me. I too am still undecided on what to do. I'm really not even sure that my remote is plagued with the same bad screen that everyone else complains about recently. Seeing as how this is my first Pronto, and the only one I have to compare it to... I think I will run up to my usual A/V store and check out their RC5000 remote they have. I'm sure it is brand new, and should exhibit the poor screen people talk about. Then I can compare that screen to my Pronto in hand, and even see if my remote is a bunk one or not. Considering my remote came with a Rev. B screen in it, I dunno... maybe the Rev. G screen is that much better. !?!?

I get the impression the brand new screens are good again.

I also get the impression that at the time the so-called "bad" screens were being made, they were also using screens from multiple sources at the same time. Thus, knowing when it was made isn't going to tell you whether it was "good" or "bad" - it was just the luck of the draw.

I did not need to cut the battery case I don't think. I did that mostly because that is how my backlight got broken in the first place. There is a little inductor there (small square component with a thin wire wrapped around it) that broke off after I dropped it. I wanted to avoid that problem and it did look a little tight against the battery pack so I cut out the area that it was pressing against. That was mostly for peace of mind.

I recomded you get a replacement. It will should not cost you anything because you already paid for it. You ordered screen G and got screen A, I think it is totally reasobable to expect either a refund or the correct screen. Even if it does not make your screen any better, having a backup that you already paid for is a nice too. :)

I am giving my Pronto to a friend and will let him do the shipping and receiving if he wants me to call and find out about the correct replacement.

My Silver Pronto screen cracked. I opened the case to find the screen part number and I don't know which number to reference. The numbers on the back of the screen are:

L303517-1
PCB576
3340 023 50471
P7758
MD576TN00-E2T

I think the scrren number is the L303517-1 but I am not sure (I don't even know who makes the scrren). Any help in finding where I can get a replacement would be great.

Lost without my Pronto.

Al:

I don't know who made the screen you call out in your post; however, a Samsung screen should work for your repair. Part numbers UG-24U01-WGHT3-G and UG-24U01-WGHT3-B are verified functional replacements. The "B" screen is the preferred choice since no modification to the Pronto is necessary. You can try http://www.flat-panel.com or a Samsung distributor near you.

I recommend reading the entire thread to see what other Pronto users have experienced.

Aaron, I am willing to give that a try but I have the silver pronto euro model. I called Phillips parts department and they do not support this model. They also told me that they thought that model may have different interal comonents (different voltages) for the screen.

Anyway I will give it a try

thanks,

Aaron,

I called Earth Computer Tech " http://www.flat-panel.com" and they ONLY have the UG-24U01-WGHT3-A model and only that model. I called my local and some non local Samsug distributors and they only had the UG-24U01-WGHT3-L model. Called Phillips and they are out of stock and wanted $200+ for one.

Thanks for the help and my search continues,

Not one week after my finding this thread, my poor Pronto lost a fight with someone's heel. I remembered this thread and ordered two replacement screens. At this price, it was worth getting a spare. Ordering from earth.com is cumbersome. You must fax or email an order even if you have a human on the telephone. I asked for confirmation that my order had been accepted but got none. They did get the screen out in two days, but I was worried it would take me a week just to find out they order hadn't gone through. Anyway, the screens arrived today and SUCCESS!

I installed the new revision A screen in my Pronto. As others, I asked for a rev B board but received a rev A screen from Earth.com. However, the screen works perfectly. No odd gray lines are present. It took more work than a direct drop in replacement because the Rev A screen's components are laid out differently from the Rev B. I had to cut two places on the plastic panel holder to clear a capacitor and one of the lapped over solder tabs holding the new panel assembly together. The L1 inductor is also in a different location so one must cut a hole in the bottom of the battery compartment to clear that component as well. Once installed without anything compressing components of the LCD panel, the screen has contrast and unblemished appearance easily matching the orignal rev B screen. I suspect the problems people have been having with the rev a screens may be due to not cutting the plastic mounts and battery compartment to clear the components. Also, the ribbon connector is tricky to tighten without accidentally angulatinging the ribbon cable. Anyway, the rev A works fine in my unit. Thanks for find this screen source!

Ok found a source from brand new "G" rev for $64 and "L" rev for $67. I decided to try the "L" rev since I'm brave and I was willing to pay $150 for a Phillips repair. I could always buy the "g" rev if the "L" fails".

Thanks Aaron for the help

Al,

Care to share the source you found? I have a Marantz 5000i and it's screen is terible. I tried the "A" replacement from Earth.com but it does not work in the new Marantz. By the way the LCD in the new Marantz is a "W" version.

Has anyone successfully changed the LCD in the Marantz?

Dave, Sure it is catalog sales (Samsung...) call 800-655-0006, ask for sales. The "G" model is listed in the catalog as UG24U01WGHT3G (No dashes, listed in the computer that way) and the "L" version is UG-24U01-WGHT3-L.

They did not have a UG-24U01-WGHT3-B or UG24U01WGHT3B.

I recieved my new screens today, I purchased the "L" rev and the "G" rev. I opened the box, and I found the one of the screens cracked during shipment, bummer. The "g" rev DOA. I installed the "L" rev, a little minor surgury (some plastic I did not need anyway was cut with a razor knife on the plastic that hold the screen where a new bank on capacitors are, not the L1). I pu the Pronto back together and

YES

No complaints anout the new screen.

Will return the broken "G" rev
