How many buttons can you specify on an empty template screen? Does it depend on the kind of device or are all empty pages the same?

It varies... as an example, if you pick a
device off of the menu, say 'Pre-amp', it's basic
configuration is about 100 buttons spread over
10 pgs. You can delete pages and buttons as you see fit. There are at least ten different
'template' screens available. They are in different combos/groups depending on the device.
You are free to relabel most everything...very
versatile. Once the PC software is out, I would
guess you could completely design screens from a
'clean slate'.

Ok, but what happens if you label a small button with more letters than its size "allows"? Does it change size or will it deny any letters above a certain amount.
If you take an empty template (no matter what device) are the amount and size of the buttons predefined, so you may either have a site with 15 small buttons or a screen with fewer but bigger buttons?
I hope one will be able to design all templates from a "clean slate" as you call it. It would make it easy to use it activity based like the Take Control is, which sounds very sensible to me.

It doesn't change size. In few days I'll be posting an article discussing the Pronto after two months' usage, look for more on that there.

Otherwise, it seems to let you go "over" the limit of visible characters by one or two, but that looks bad. After that small over-allowance, it won't let you input more.

Phil, as Daniel mentioned you are currently
limited in your relabelling to fit within what
they allow as 'button limits'.

You are right, some screens, say for example a 'keypad enter' or 'menu navigate' screen could have 10-15 smallish buttons while other screens may have only 6 or 8 or so. The larger buttons allow maybe 20 character labels and the smallest only one or two char at most. There is also a selection of icons/symbols available that you may
typically see on a remote. All labelling is
carried out on a nifty 'zoomable' standard
keyboard that I'm sure someone got a raise over.
