Hi everybody,

I'm interested in buying one of the above mentioned remotes, I live in Italy, and I can't find them even on the net.
Computability.com could send me a Sony but $49 shipping is half of it's price...
I wait your suggestions
Thanks
bye
Paolo

You are doing a great job with this site...It's very useful

If you can swing the extra cabbage, there's a
Philips dealer in Chicago that has Pronto in
stock. It's Metronet, details posted below in the
'Question to Jack Schultz' thread. I live in
Canada and I ordered one yesterday. I would
guess overseas shippage wouldn't be a problem.

Hey Andy,

I'm a fellow "canuck" as well. How much for the unit and shipping? Any concerns regarding customs; taxes (gst, duty, etc.) or delivery?

I called customs as I live in Canada too, you don't pay duty if the product is made in the USA, but I'm told it's made in Belgium, so look at 25% for duty, 8% for illinois state tax, and GST!

I can see duty & GST, but should you have to pay State tax? This is not normally charged... unless there's been some special arrangement made.

I don't know details on duty etc. Sales tax is NOT chraged as it is interstate(country) commerce.
As far as country of origina, the box says Belgium, which is where current production occurs, however I'm not sure whether this applies as the product is sold via Philips in America.
Hope thsi helps.

Alex,

The shipping is roughly $30-35.00US for UPS
AIR Expedited, which is a 3 day service. It's
actually a little cheaper overall than UPS ground,
even though the ground is only about $12-15US,
they will tack on ~$45.00 of brokerage fees, plus
it's a 7 - 10 day kick.
With any UPS air service there are no extra
brokerage fees.

As far as duty implications, I called Canada
Customs, and the latest is, as far as home
electronics products go, there is no more duty
when shipped from US to Canada, REGARDLESS
of country of manufacture. Apparently this is
a very recent change to the legislation. Earlier
this year, this was only the case for US made
merch. You will however pay GST on the declared value of the merch. in $CDN.

That's the story and I'm stick'n to it.

That's true about UPS - Internationally, their cheap service becomes the most expensive.

Take a $400 item. UPS 5-7 day Ground might be $15; $23 Canadian. Then it comes to the border. Declared value of $400, or $620 Canadian. UPS takes a 10% of the declared value as brokerage fee - $62. Add that on your other shipping and you're at $85. Air UPS may have only cost $70 Canadian, and you'd have it a lot sooner.

GST, of course would be the same, plus you'd have to pay some sort of standard duty, unless Customs can be lead to believe it's computer equipment rather than audio/visual equipment.

Daniel,

I can only go by the latest information provided
by Customs and UPS.

No duty, whatsoever, on AV products anymore
from US to Canada, no matter the point
of manufacture. There is no such thing as
'Standard Duty'. As you indicated, no brokerage
fees if you opt for one of the UPS air services.
The driver will want GST on the $620.00 upon
delivery, and I suppose PST if your subject to it.

I think you're wrong about duty Andy, because I was told the same thine except that if the electronic product is made out of the usa and says anything besides made in the usa on the box, you will pay duty. But I hope your right! :)

I think you're both right. :-)

I'll accept no duty on A/V equipment from the States.

I'll also accept duty charged on items made out of the States -- this is pretty much standard practice.

However, the actual charges would most likely apply to items being SHIPPED from overseas. Some guy in the back room of an A/V shop filling out customs documents ain't gonna look for the tiny "Made in Belgium" text on the bottom of the left side, so he'd just fill in USA or even leave it blank. Besides, they're going to put your order in another box.

No... you guys are right and I'm a dumbass.

I guess I figured the customs officer I spoke
to knew their job. I ended up calling a customs
supervisor in Calgary, and he cleared up my
confusion as follows:

Most AV electronics are now duty free when
shipped from US to Canada, regardless of point
of manufacture. However it still comes down
to the specific description of the item you
are importing. In this case, a remote control,
is duty exempt. Other types of items, may average
5-6% duty. And, as you know anything made in US
is exempt.

The package must clearly state that it is a remote, and a general description could result
in duty being erroneously levied.

I'll shut up now.
