Having 'Macro Groups' on the Pronto is just
nothing more than a way of segregating macros
of similar function. It is not limiting in any
way. I think the basic idea is having easy
access to your macros in a categorized pull
down menu, just as each component is contained
in a pull down 'device' menu. I also think
they've incorporated a very structured/logical
interface that works well, and can stand on it's own without the software. Any perceived 'limitation' should be addressed in the companion
software when it is released.

If you write a lot of macros, then 'grouping them makes perfect sense. Each group can hold
25 macros (5 pgs of 5 each). If you have say
17 favorite channels, then it makes perfect
sense to group them under their own category,
why not? The same could be said for macros
such as 'watch LD' or 'watch DVD' or 'watch VHS'
(god forbid).

Amount of macros and groups is only limited
by memory avaialble.

It is a limitation if "Macros" cannot be used in other places like "Device Templates".

It is a limitation if a "Page" you wish to perform one or two tasks that requires a macro (and a dozen single IR code buttons) is limited to 5 buttons.

It does not make any sense to me to segragate macros (expect for programming purposes). It does make sense to segragate "activities" (which might not encompass ALL macros).

It may simply be a poor choice of naming conventions as I tried to elaborate in a couple replies back. See also Clay's new thread which is right on the mark in my opinion.

A remote is much less attractive to me if I have to surf it during a movie for common tasks (some of which might require a macro).

And for clarity we are talking about *CURRENT* implemenation of Pronto and things may completely change once the PC software is released. Although Clay's response from Phillips was not very encouraging.

Now that I have played with the beta software, I can atest to the flexibility provided and also understand the approach that Philips has taken in the standard "default" software.
Many remote users are:
a) not computer literate
b) simply want to eliminate all the clutter
So, the standard release will likely serve them just fine, and of course how does one draw the line in the "standard" anyway? No line, no product to market, no solution for anyone.
On the otherhand, as I stated, for you power users, I believe that you'll find that the ProntoEdit program is extremely clear, powerful, and addresses all of your needs. Surfing channel icons...very simple. Maybe even some icons larger (favorites)than others? No problem.
I will post more as I have more time to play. Suffice it to say that I am very impressed with what I see.

George, maybe you should buy a Pronto before you start telling people that actually own them
what they can or can't do. Incidentally, a
button on a macro page is not a single IR
command, but executes a string of commands you
design. No limit to the amount of commands,
comprende?

Finger prints!!!!
After a short amount of use in a lit room they stare back at me. Try this... I went to Office Max and got a PDA stylus and at 3 for 10 bucks you can afford to lose a couple in the couch. And with one of these babies you could turn off the keyboard ZOOM (if that were possible). May be one more thing to loose but it keeps it clean and its safe "manual "or use blunt pen cap"".

Hate Those Finger prints too!!!
Another idea could be the use of a clear plastic sheet (something like the plastic overlay banners on monitors and TV sets in stores - they cling to glass without any adhesives - peel off easily with no marks), cut to size. I'm not sure if they're commercially available. If anyone knows, please post a reply.
Thanks!!!

Ben,

I did not say anything about the length of macro commands, did I?

I'm refering to two other limitations around macros (see previous post). Which very well won't be a limitation with the PC software.

And I also assume the length of a macro could be 1 command, can't it? I think that's part of the confusion, you so think of Macros as being one "command". It's like "macro groups" are Pronto's version of "Activities". Albeit, a bit lame with the 5 button per page limit, as it *currently* stands. Some people (even pronto owners) might not see this as a limitation to the way I wish to use a touch screen remote, I do.

If I'm wrong on anything I'm sure I will be corrected, and would be quite pleased for anyone to do so, so we can all clearly understand the limitations. I have every intention of getting a Pronto after the IRIQ episode. And I will report on how well it meets my needs which may be different from others needs.
