and the silence from the manufacturer is deafening...

I agree, something needs to be done about this!
What about a petition to Philips/Marantz?

For the price of these units they should be perfect, not close to perfect, which they are - we just need the 'old' screen fitting by the sounds of it...

I just got a replacement unit for one that I had for about 10 months, and it was an older model with the light sensor in it. The remote works fine, but it has a dark spot about the size of this (O) on the screen. It is always there, even when you turn the contrast to where the rest of the screen is blank. Also, the display is not as sharp as my old (newer) one. I had to wait for about 10 or 12 days for this one and thought I would go crazy using 5 or 6 remotes. Oh well...

I have two silver prontos, one with a light sensor (which has a green backlight and clear display) and one without(which has a blueish backlight and washed out display). I know from previously owning a HK takecontrol, which also suffers from dim backlight and washed out screen, that its posible to increase the battery voltage and get very good results.
Is this safe to do with a pronto???

Daniel can you help?

I agree with GB to send a ('big') petition to Philips.
I'm interested in buying a Pronto (TSU2000), but will wait unless this is clarified.
In my opinion, it is unacceptable to pay some hundred bucks for a Pronto (no matter which version) and then being diasppointed about the screen only because of some dollars saved for Philips using 'cheap' screens...

Is there NO ANSWER AT ALL from Philips ??
I just cannot believe that...

OK, now let's prepare a petition.
If there are around 20-30 persons 'e-undersigning' a petition/request for the 'good old screen version', i will send a written letter to philips to see how they react (be sure i will not stop bothering them unless i get an answer...).
Please add your name and email in this thread to take part.

me too!

All my friends like my Pronto and when I ordered them a Pronto ( 2 Pronto RC's I have ordered so far and set up as well as my own)and set them up I noticed the diffrence. They also noticed the difference but still like it.

I recently purchased my Pronto and while it is a wonderful device, I too am quite disappointed in the contrast of the display screen. (And the battery charger issues and the Pronto's apparent fragility to even the slightest drop; those are other issues but also ones that the manufacturer also has never responded to the hundreds of posts and enquiries reported on by this board)

Just got a silver Pronto. The display screen is poor, almost unreadable. Some icons and text are unreadable. Very dim and fuzzy. I thought something was wrong with this unit and searched for info on this site. Looks like a common problem. The contrast wheel is only useable for 1/10 the travel, then it is either total washed or dark. I am using AA batteries that came with the unit.

So do all currently available pronto and rc5000 remotes have bad lcds? I was going to bid on a silver one that is posted on ebay but now will wait for further info. I also spoke today from someone at Philips Pronto to ask them if there will be a trade up or send in and modify onlder tsu1000 to the new 2 meg one tsu2000. The person said at this time they will not be doing any such thing. I also asked her about buying a silver one in the u.s. and needing a warranty repair. Said I would have to send it back to the country it was purchased from. Not a great big of a deal. Then I asked her if after the one year warranty period, could I get it repaird at the local philips repair store. She said that they don't repair them. If you have a problem during the one year, they just send you a replacement. "If I could find someone to repair it I should do that." That sucks. One las thing. Does anyone know if you can upgrade the flash memory yourself? I've seen someone post that the lcd screen can be replaced.
Thanks
Don

I got a new RC5000 today. This replaced my old one because this lost 5 vertical lines on the right side.
The new one has a good and clear picture. The contrast is really good, almost overexposed.
I'm happy now! :-)

Martin Walla:

I'll participate in your petition.

I know a better touch screen is available for the Pronto. A much sharper display without any contrast drift. (See my "Response by Aaron" above.)

Count me in on the petition. The pronto is a great remote. It is really a shame to see that a poor display was put in the unit.
