Thanks Lyndel, I used that to get it over. It is loaded in the RC9500 and looks good.
I could use you and your forum's help on this issue though.

Even after copying the clean IR codes directly to the buttons, the RC9500 seems....well slower than my RC5200. Should that be? Since my RC5200 still "works" (it just can never be programmed again....kind of stuck in stasis) I can compare the two and the RC9500 definitely lags the RC5200 and the OEM remote say for a DTV box.

Could I have possibly gotten a unit with poor IR response or an issue on the IR side?
Could there be such a thing?? Or is that just how they are?

Like I said, I thought I read a thread somewhere about the NG line being slower if you alias to IR commands, but even with them copied directly to the buttons, I notice it is slower in an A/B comparison.

Also, I bought a new high capacity battery for it. How long should this typically last with normal use? Although I was playing with it quite a bit trying to determine if it had an issue, I noticed it going down a few bars just in one night. Normal?

Thoughts?

Recommendation #1 - Ensure you have latest firmware from files section.

Recommendation #2 - If you have not done so already, turn animation off on the remote via Tools/Settings. Animation causes background paint followed by a slide-in.

Speed also has lots to do with how many images are on the page as well as their quality. If you used JPG images, know that these are 24bit images and therefore take up lots of room. Using a .PNG image, even if not transparent takes much less space and renders faster.

The NG series is slower on Page Jumps for sure and is dependent on the images on the page. A search for 'page jumps are slow' may also provide some additoinal tips.

With regard to the battery, uploads/downloads can drain the battery as well. If I recall, I had to charge my 7000 usually within 1-2 days.

Lyndel,
Thanks! I am only concerned about IR button pushes (hard and soft), not page changes.

I just want to make sure I don't have a defective unit! Is there any test I can do to make sure that I don't have a defective IR unit in there or something?

I'll definitely check the firmware update.

Good grief......I downloaded the most recent firmware...
The battery was charged.

it asked me if I wanted to keep my current configuration, I said yes, and it said it ran to completion, and when it was done, my RC9500 would not even turn on/wakeup!!!!!!

I tried unplugging the battery and plugging back in. Nothing!

So I ran it again....it said it could not retrieve my configuration file, and if I updated the firmware it would be overwritten. I said go ahead, it communicated and said that is uploaded the firmware but it still would not wake up.

I then tried to upload my most current configuration and wizz it could not communicate.

Any suggestions? At least before it worked!

Help!
Thanks,

BillB

Well after a few attempts I was able to downgrade to the older firmware version 3.2.17 and eventually got it to successfully download to the RC9500 and it came back to life. But that was after several unsuccessful downloads and program freeze-ups.

But every time it came back with that older version and then I tried to download the latest version in the file section (3.10.5)...that version even when it said it ran to completion leaves the RC9500 dead. No reset, battery pull, nothing brings it back. All I can do is re-download the older firmware to bring it back.

It then accepted my config and now I think I am back where I started.

But I guess the question is why won't it accept the most recent firmware?

I am running it on the oldest PC I have running Vista. Although Wizzit wanted XP compatibility mode to run, it seems like I had the most success with the older firmware, just running it straight.

Anyway, any thoughts? I wonder if there is truly something wrong with this remote....

Try to find an older PC with XP and SP2 or SP3. Install the software on it and give it a try.

Great idea! I think I have a powered-down old relic that just might fit the bill!

I searched all over and did not see people in old posts having problems upgrading to that new firmware. Very strange.

Will fire the old warhorse up later today and see what happens!

Lyndel,
Thanks....after installing Wizzit on XP so that the USB drivers installed, and then pointing XP to the driver directory. Boy, those were the days.

The first try also resulted in a dead unit....I had said to keep my config.
I tried again, and of course since it was not there, it just overwrote with the default config and installed the firmware. I had seen this happen from the other PC also....but this time it came to life with the default config. Then I downloaded my config and it is working.

Now I just have to determine if I have an IR issue.

In reviewing threads of ancient history, I did not some mention of IR issues with the TSU7000 where certain firmware versions introduced IR issues where it didn't fire enough, or double-fired, and delays had to be put in. Did the Marantz firmware have any of these issues?

I mean it works....but it just does not seem to be as quick and responsive in firing commands as my RC5200 was.

I guess I'll see if this new firmware makes a difference.

Thanks again for all of your help.

I am not sure if the Marantz version ever introduced the 'Duration' setting for an IR code. I know the latter 7000 versions did. This featire was how the IR length was corrected.

The reason I suggested a 7000 instead of RC9500 goes back to a change in the marketing from the Classic line to the NG line.

In the days of the TSU1000/2000, Marantz paid for a differentiator for the RC5000/5000i such that they could do multiple page jumps but no beeps, etc... As a result, Marantz version's feature set was more robust/flexible than the Philips version's.

However, with the NG line, Philips held features close to the chest and IMO, Marantz was not willing to pay for the prime features and as a result, got fewer firmware updates and editor revisions. So, the 'Duration' might not be available as this was one of the things Philips added near the end of the run of the NG remotes.

Back to your original question. On the NG line, the send may be slower but was something I learned to live with. I no longer own a 7000 but I do recall lots of issues and much of my experience with them has been documented in my many posts here.

Lyndel,
Thanks, really appreciate it. Looks like the duration function was added with Wizzit 2.0.6. I'll have to research it a bit.

I really just went with the RC9500 due to the family unit's familiarity with the form factor and buttons. Less tech support for me.

Thanks for the feedback on the NG "slowness". I just wanted to determine if I had a bum unit or if it was a "feature" :)

On the form factor, understood. One thing I liked about the 7000 was it felt sturdy in the hand compared to my older RC9200 on which the battery cover ALWAYS squeaked.

Lyndel,
Well, I am about ready to give up on this unit. I adjusted some IR durations on my config and tried to upload to my RC9500 which now has the most recent firmware. I run everything as administrator.

It uploaded the current config fine to the PC. However when I tried to download my adjusted configuration back to the unit, it stopped when it seemed to be done (after reading checksum....then communicating....right before it normally says complete)then said "An error occurred while downloading the configuration to the device". The unit was then stuck on the "downloading config file-wait". So it was again bricked. Would not communicate at all after that.

So I was back trying to re-update firmware to try to bring it back to life. And that required multiple attempts of the old firmware, then the new firmware, until it worked. Finally after all that I tried to download the config again. Same error.
So then I tried to download the last configuration file which I KNOW worked with the old firmware. THAT also errored out with the new firmware. I tried another PC, same result.

So, then I tried loading the old firmware (without updating to the new firmware), and tried to download new configurations. They all worked just fine again.

Finally, as one last check, I thought I would just try to download the default configuration file that comes with wizzit to the unit after it updated to the latest firmware.  Now THAT also failed!!!!!!  So clearly this is not an issue with my config. And I might suspect PC communications....but why would it work okay with the old firmware?  I know this new firmware expanded the memory, if the unit has an issue with memory could that be causing the issue?

So essentially, with the new firmware, I cannot download any new configurations to the unit. Including the default one.  However, with the old firmware, I can download any config I want!!!

I have not read posts in my searches of people having trouble like this with the RC9500 or the firmware update. So if this unit is having troubles, do you think there must be something wrong with it?  This is the firmware that expanded the memory.

This thread talks about something similar, but my problem is only with the newer firmware.

[Link: remotecentral.com]

I am now just running it with the old firmware.  Truth be told, the new firmware might have seen a bit snappier....not sure.   But for whatever reason I guess I cannot run the new firmware on this unit with my config. However if the ONLY improvement of the new firmware was opening up the memory, I don't really care. I have like 70% free memory and it doesn't "flash" when it turns off like the new firmware! Kind of torn on which way to go with it.

Maybe you meant to post to your thread in the NG forum? I don't know what to tell you here. Never had such issues with the 7x00 series. Hoping some others who have RC9500 will pipe up.

Lyndel,
Thanks, I will start one there. I apologize....this thread started with my RC5200 not communicating, morphed into what to buy and than this. I actually had the though of linking or posting there but it was late and I did not.

Sorry about that.

The 5200 was my favorite model, with screen dimness being the drawback.
