(This thread moved to here from the Installers Forum, at their suggestion.) (I hope this is the correct forum for it?)
Hi there,
I'm new to remote control and have been soaking up the info here. Great stuff!
I see a lot of informal talk about IRL file formats but have not found an "official" spec. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Also - The VERT program's documentation says it can "clean up" a file, but doesn't explain why cleaning might be necessary, or what is accomplished. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Gee, no answers for weeks! How unusual.
I'll hazard a guess and maybe someone will be motivated to correct me if I'm wrong.
My guess is that "cleaning" isn't what it sounds like. It might mean that the codes you have can be interpreted and decoded to figure out exactly what protocol, device number and function they are, then PERFECT codes can be generated. This is cleaning by total replacement of hinky codes with perfect ones.
Right?

The Classic Pronto FAQ has information on clean vs unclean codes. There's a document in the files section on the Pronto Hex IR format by Barry Gordon.
Other than that, one good source might the the Yahoo JP1 forum which John Fine runs. John is an expert on IR protocols as well.
