Hope I'm in the right forum as newly registered. Just bought a used RU970 to replace my beloved RU890 which was sadly on it's way out.

Worked fine for a week then suddenly take it off the chager and it's dead. On charger it works fine. Tried a reset but still the same.

I assume it's the battery and is this common?

It is likely the battery. Replace it.
