After installing snow leopard, I am unable to launch Tonto. I get the message that it is looking for JRE 1.5, which must be installed manually. I am assuming there is a newer version of JRE installed with 10.6, and am unsure how to proceed. Is there a newer version of Tonto that works with the latest Java? I can't find anything on the giantlaser website. Thanks.

I just downloaded Tonto 1.48 under snow leopard and it is launching for me. Can't say I've tested it other than opening and clicking around (don't have a cable yet) - but it works. Perhaps delete your old .jar and try again?

Also in the terminal I checked the java version I have installed in Snow Leopard:

javac -version
javac 1.6.0_15

I deleted my old .jar, and I can't install or download the new one- I just get an error message. Once I was able to get my old file to launch, and I got the message unable to find serial communications library, but then the next time I just got an error message again "unable to load application".
Any ideas?

I downloaded Tonto again (1.48) on my old Mac running 10.4.11 and copied it over to my MacBook Pro running 10.6.1, and voila! I'm up and running again.

maybe a separate thread, but I just got my Keyspan USB to serial and trying to connect to my old TSU-2000 pronto. Can't get the keyspan to work it seems... Any suggestions?

I have a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.4), connected to a Pronto RU970 via a "ABC Products USB to RS232 cable".

I have tried to get Tonto to work on an imac with 10.5.x.

It is using a pl2303 based usb to serial convertor. It will upload a ccf from the remote, but if I try to d/l back to the remote it gets to about 23% (current) and gives the following error...

Invalid probe response (67)

then all serial communication is cut off unless I restart the mac.

I am trying to get it running for a friend. I have an FTDI adapter which I managed to get working. It has almost become a personal vendetta at this point :)

I was just hoping to hear from others if they had had luck with this adapter. It is strange that it gets to a certain point then gives up the ghost. I am inclined to believe that it is something that "can be fixed"

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of this missing comms library problem. I am using Tonto 1.48 and OS X 10.6.5 and Tonto is mostly working except cannot upload download to Pronto cos get "Tonto cannot find the serial communication libraries" on start up.

With a lot of help from the Apple Java Development Forum I have solved this problem (I got no response from the author). The reason it occurs is that Tonto being an old program uses 32 bit libraries. This is not a problem with OS X Leopard because it runs programs in 32 bit mode by default. However, Snow Leopard runs in 64 bit mode by default so when Tonto starts up under Snow Leopard it reports that it can't find the (64 bit) communications library. The solution is to right click the Tonto app, select Get Info, and check the "open in 32 bit mode" checkbox and hey presto no error message.

But I now realise that all this is somewhat academic because Tonto, I believe, uses the older "Classic" method of talking to serial ports which is not supported under Snow Leopard. This leave Mac users who want to program Pronto devices the choice of going back to ProntoEdit in a VM running Windows or using Tonto in a VM running an older version of Mac OS (assuming that the VMs can talk successfully to serial ports via USB!).

Please ignore my last post. I have now got Tonto 1.48 working with Snow Leopard and communicating with my Pronto. The 2 important things are: 1) make sure Tonto is running in 32 bit mode (see above) and 2) make sure you are using the correct keyspan driver for your operating system. The CD supplied with the my keyspan converter contained a driver for OS X 10.2.8 or greater and this did not work with Snow Leopard (10.6.5) - Tonto could not find my Pronto. However, the keyspan website has a driver for OS X 10.6x and after downloading and installing this all works correctly. I guess the moral is always check for latest drivers even if you have just bought something!

Thanks to Adrian, that 32-bit mode issue was holding me up as well. I just got my TSU2000 working with Tonto on OSX 10.7 Lion.

This is a tantalizing thread, but somewhat frustrating. I can't find Tonto 1.4.8 anywhere (the giantlaser website only has 1.4.4), and what's more, when I look at the properties of the tonto.jar file, there is no checkbox offering a 32-bit option. Can anyone help me? I've been sailing along merrily with my TS2000, but after 11 years, I have a new television and I really want to be able to edit this remote again!

EDIT: Found a Tonto.jnlp file which, when run, complains that I don't have the proper version of Java installed. Ran System Profiler to find out what version I do have. Edited the Tonto.jnlp file with TextEditor to update the version number it was looking for. Save and re-run Tonto.jnlp; this time, it downloads a file from giantlaser.com and asks me what name I want to save the app as. Save the file, right-click, and now the 32-bit option is available. Click that box, run the app, and I'm in. Phew!

Now, if only I can find discrete power / input codes for the new TV, I'll be set.
