Its worked before, perfectly. I'm using the same laptop and usb to serial convertor and I've no idea where the problem is or where to start looking.

I'm starting to think that the issue may be with the lead. Its a Philex. I've looked on their really poor web-site for the driver, but the zip file there only seems to contain a removal tool.

Googled more and found another, but it didn't solve any problems.

The details box that you can open when you try to down/upload a config file is blank, so no clues there either.

End of my tether.... any advice.

I've never seen this problem, so I'm jsut guessing.

Since the details box is blank, I suspect the software. Reinstall the editing software, reboot the computer, and try again. Which brings up --
Are you using the software that has been sitting unused on your computer since you last programmed the Pronto?
If you recently installed the software, did you reboot the computer after installation?

I've never heard of Philex, but I'm in the states. I assume that "the lead" means the USB-serial adaptor, not the lead from the adaptor to the remote. I've heard only of the Keyspan USB-serial adaptor, have heard that it never fails, have one and it has never failed with Pronto and URC remotes, and have heard that other adaptors fail from time to time in apparently random ways.

When you say

Googled and found another, but it didn't solve any problems.

do you mean you actually bought that other one and it gave you the same behavior, or that finding that other one did not give you any helpful information?

Just in case it matters, please tell us what model remote you have and what version of the editor you are using. Also, is your computer running XP or Vista? Is it a Mac that can run Windows?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Make sure that the USB to serial adapter is configured to be your first available COM port. If mouse is COM1, make USB->Serial COM2.

I installed the prontoedit software that is available on this site, and I've re-booted several times.

I was googling for a driver for the Philex USB>Serial adaptor.

The remote is the RU940 and I'm running XP.

How do I configure the adaptor ?

Go to Philex Site?

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Then, go to the Hardware Tab and click 'Device Manager'. From there, find the adapter and right click on it and see if you can change COM port to COM1.

I just updated the Tonto site after years of neglect. Also added a JNLP launcher with new serial comm libraries. Not sure if this is working on Windows as my dev platform has shifted to Mac. Would appreciate your testing if you've got the time and inclination.

Thanks!

Tonto is a third party software replacement for ProntoEdit. Stewart is the author. I use Tonto and find it's much better than PE, but YMMV. One thing for certain, Tonto is MUCH better at finding the remote than PE is. No need to worry about which com port the remote is hooked to.
