I have an older Pronto (RU890) that uses a COM port on the back of one of my older computers for the COM->1/8" jack link cable. (At least I think that's what it's called, right - a COM port? Looks like a male VGA monitor connector)

Two questions, I guess:

First, will a RU890 work with something more modern like a USB->1/8" jack cable?

Second, does such a cable exist?

I'm hoping the answer to both questions is yes, or I'm going to have to keep this old computer around forever just to program the remote!

Thanks,

Mac

The answer is "YES" to both questions - there is loads of info on here about it.

The connector is a com port but more usually called a serial port these days. What you are looking for is a USB to Serial cable. (I think "keyspan" or something is the one that works but look in the Pronto FAQ on here first for the info!

If you're using a desktop computer as opposed to a laptop, you can also use a serial port card. I use this one [Link: newegg.com] and it works fine under Vista 64 bit. It's much cheaper than the Keyspan adaptor and there is no speed advantage for going USB to serial.

Keyspan makes one model of adaptor from a single USB to single RS232 connector. I've heard repeatedly that this is the only model that works all time with the entire Prontoid spectrum of products. It solved your exact problem for me.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

If you have a desktop the PCI/PCI-E card may be the best route, as you end up with a real, legitimate serial port rather than a conversion port.

I'm using a Belkin USB-Serial cable for my 2000. Does not work in PE but works great in Tonto. PM if you want any further info / drivers.

I recommended the Keyspan because over the years, I've always heard that the Kespan works with all kinds of remote controls and software, but others have some glitch somewhere. For instance, the Belkin does nto work in PE.

Yup, no question, if buying i too would go with the keyspan for the reasons you listed. I should clarify, I got my Belkin for free so I made it work.
