I was playing with my Pronto today trying to set all the different sound fields from my Sony 825 DD receiver when I ran into some problems which maybe someone can help me with.
I was watching a movie today - the negotiator - and I couldnt really hear the talking through the center channel...so I cranked that to 10db, still couldnt hear it that well so put up the main volume, whcih worked but then everytime a helicopter came along it was SO loud that i had to turn down the volume...annoying t0 keep on having to turn up and down the volume. Does anyone know what to set to make the speech louder through the center channel but keep the effects reasonable volumes with the rest of hte system?
I tried all the sound fields this thing comes with, but some dont use the center channel, some do. I threw it into basic DOLBY PRO LOGIC and still had the same problem...anyone?
Thanks

Some movies are just like this.

Most AC-3 processors have a "Night Mode" or Compression mode. This reduces the dynamic range (Highs and Lows) and keeps the midrange the same.
The purpose is for "Late Night" viewing and not really for correcting a movie or setup problem.

I noticed several AC-3 Disks lately sounded much better on the Dolby ProLogic sound track than they did with the AC-3 track.

Have you balanced your system with a Sound Pressure Meter (i.e. Radio Shack $19.95) this can make a huge difference in system performance.

This subject might be more appropriate to this sites "DVD Forum".

I had the same problem awhile back and discovered that one of my center channel cables had come loose!! Ya never know...might be worth a look if you haven't checked already.

My DVD machine has this compression functionality internally.. It has 4 settings.. off, low, mid and high.. for the amount of compression overall. I find that having it set to low is best overall without having to fidet all the time. You might want to check your devices for the same functionality.. I have noticed that the DVD player does it as well as the SONY TV.

I don't know if this takes you in the right direction or not...

Try adjusting the LFE (effects) level. It should quiet the helicopter butleave the voices alone. I have this option on the Yamaha and I don't think it is unique to the brand.

I agree that some movies are just made this way, but you should be able to fix it without compressing the dynamic range...
