Hi All,

I have recently upgraded from an RC5000i to a (2nd hand) Marantz RC9200 remote. Initial impressions are mostly very good. I was pleased to see that my old RC5000 CCF was accepted by the new remote. Although the old buttons were obviously monochrome, putting them on a plain colour background has a very pleasing effect. Adding the odd colour button e.g. a red record button, and a conservative use of colour text here and there gives a very pleasing effect. The only thing I've noticed is that whereas a plain full screen colour frame has good uniformity, when a light coloured button is placed on the screen, the background colour is lightened slightly above the button (right up to the top of the screen) and below (all the way down) the button - like a striped wallpaper effect. I was wondering if this is down to the age of the screen, or if this is normal from new. Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

Does adjustment of the contrast wheel help?

No, not really....... Turning the contrast (actually brightness) wheel down gives a much too dark screen, whereas turning it up washes out the colour which negates the point of having a colour remote in the first place! Darker or brighter reduces the effect, but the effect is worst when the "contrast" wheel is set where the colour is "purest/best".

Thanks for your VERY quick reply !!

I seem to recall that there was some banding based on brightness of the image but don't know how bad it is.

Just curious. Why did you go to RC9200 from RC5000i? Why not move to a TSU7000/7500 or one of the newer pro remotes?

Lyndel is correct, the 9200 can have banding issues. Use of the contrast wheel will reduce, but not eliminate the effect. Soft button color/placement also has an effect as the bands vertically "line up with" and are caused by buttons of a contrasting color/darkness.

The RC9200 uses older passive matrix screen technology, which is susceptible to this sort of thing. For example, if you put a black box in the middle of a white screen, the box will "smear" vertically and horizontally. This is due to how pixels are addressed in that type of screen. It isn't an issue on active matrix screens (which is used in EVERYTHING these days, as well as color Prontos from the NG series forward).

The effect can be reduced by keeping high contrast areas to a minimum, and avoiding lining up such areas (which doesn't really work in remote applications).

Thanks for your replies,

Lyndel - I went for the RC9200 for two reasons - firstly it's a colour remote! - my eyes ain't what they used to be and so having a RED record button for instance makes navigation much easier when I don't have my specs to hand. Secondly - cost - I picked up my RC9200 on Ebay for just over £100 complete with RF kit - I think it's a bargain.
Daniel - I've gotten over the banding issue by using colours which reduce the issue to pretty much a "non issue" really so I'm very happy now. I just wasn't sure what the performance level of these screens was, now I know they have their (surmountable) limitations, all is well.

Many Thanks

Understand your purchase re color. FYI, the NG platform and later support .PNG graphics with embedded alpha-channel transparency. You are not forced to try to edit .bmp files to blend in a background.
