Read the FAQ about endless reboot/reset loop. It describes how to fix. You will need to download the firmware into the remote to correct this problem.

Unless it has been changed since I placed it in my file of golden things to know about the Pronto remotes, the FAQ process does not involve downloading the firmware, it involves getting a cabernet prompt, then downloading a ccf.

I have heard that this process takes some split-second, or lucky, timing, but I have never run into that*. Is the firmware download cure descrbed somewhere else, and is THAT the process that requires luck?

*when you have a cabernet prompt, you have to download a ccf in a very few seconds, so you want to store a ccf in the HyperTerminal directory so you only have to do a few mouse clicks to choose the ccf to download. If you have to click all over the place to get to a ccf, it might take more time than you have available to start the download...is this the timing issue, maybe, that you were talking about, Lyndel?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie,

In short, you are right. It is the CCF download that is required, not the firmware. I had a firmware issue on my mind at the time I posted.

The Terminal-based approach I mention in the FAQ is usually sure-fire and works on the first or second try (usually second because people don't realize exactly what's happening on the first attempt).

Trying to use the firmware upgrade program to fix this, which can also work, requires luck more than still. Now, in the Terminal approach you don't want to be spending much time between initiating the download process and finding your CCF to download, but I've never had it time out (and if it does you can probably just "dl ccf" again or just start over).

I believe that Tonto has incorporated an automated version of the FAQ instructions.

Or second or third. I had to email Daniel after trying this four times a few years ago, and he pointed out to me what I was doing wrong. I found the biggest help was having the ccf -- any ccf -- in the Hyperterminal directory.

I assume you mean a constant reboot? Hyperterminal normally works fine, the only other method (that you haven't tried) is that you could try Tonto. It's a 3rd party alternative to Pronto Edit/Touch Screen Setup, and is available here: [Link: giantlaser.com].

After installing, select your remote type, and from the toolbar choose "remote" and then "undead remote". Follow the instructions.

MacOSX,

I'm not a Mac guy, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. Are you running some sort of Windows 98 emulation in order to run Tonto? If so, there is a dll (not a part of Tonto) which causes a failed download (in Win 98) approximately half the time. This would require "undead" to get your remote back up and running. This problem doesn't occur in Windows XP, nor have I seen it mentioned regarding the Mac version of Tonto.

Bomberjim: I run both the Windows and the Mac version of Tonto. I have Virtual PC with Windows XP SP2 and Tonto and it works fine. I also have the Mac version of tonto and it has more problems on my machine. It was when I run Tonto on Mac it failed. Anyway the problem is solved now. A smaller ccf file fixed the problem with HyperTerminal. Thanks alot guys for your help.

Interesting. Failed downloads, especially with larger files, hence the rebooting, was exactly what used to happen with Win98 and Tonto.

Strangely it works better on Virtual PC then on Mac for me. I thught it would work just fine when I find out that there were an software like tonto for Mac, but it didn´t. I realized yesterday that the size of the program Tonto is very different. The mac version is not even 1 Mb, and the PC version is over 13 Mb. It´s usally not tht big difference in size between the two plattforms. Maybe they been a little fast with the Mac version but there are some users on the RemoteCentral forum that used it and worked fine for them. So maybe I have some issues in my machine that only shows in Tonto.
