I am having the same USB problems as others, with no luck. I think I've tried everything! I have a Keyspan 19QW USB Serial adapter and loaded it to my Sony Vaio running XP. My Pronto (TSU2000) doesn't respond. THe keyspan loads to COM4, but Prontoedit works on COM1. I've read all the messages, but just can't get it to work. How do I change the COM settings on my Vaio? Any help would be greatly apprciated.

Thanks NickM

I suggest you use Tonto. I installed a new XP machine the other day and added a cheap USB-serial port.

I got the latest driver from the manufacturer and then ran Tonto, the port was COM3 and Tonto had no problems picking it up.

Tonto is fast and reliable. Makes editing a cinch.

SELECT- Device Manager
Expand- Ports(Com and LPT)
SELECT- Port to work with
GOTO Port Settings Tab

Make sure to move whatever is currently port 1 To a new setting prior to moving your Com to Port 1

Pronto Edit was written as a DOS shell and, as such, is limited by those constraints. Your idea of an "upgrade" is really like asking them to totally recreate the program... which they've done with the Pronto NG and having that remote connect via USB 1.1.

Why should Philips be responsible for the direction the PC industry has gone and be forced to totally recreate a program because you find it inconvenient. After all, their software and hardware platform was created before USB existed and certainly before it became standard on machines.

Would you be angry with a CD-R manufacturer who created a burner five years ago - when only 74 minute blanks were available and it won't support 99 minute blank CD's now? I realize your circumstances are frustrating but would ask you to realize that Philips didn't create those circumstances.

Simple USB solution - go to Radio Shack and buy their generic USB->Serial adapter and follow Impaqt's directions above.

I can understand your post RC...

But if a company cant evolve or at least be able to offer some sort of flexibity with their software than they take the chance of consumers buying other products.

I have several dos based win98 software programs that will allow me to at least choose a different com port to choose from.

I just got back from the EHXpo in long beach and there is some serious competition with the color touch remotes out there for less money...

So I would hate to see philips create a $1000 remote that is not flexible with future changes in OS software upgrades...

just my thought...

not to say that Im not going to go out to get another usb adapter...I will...just that I spent a hour or so
late last night trying every which way to try and get this adapter to work with my laptop...

just got frustrated...

Understood - and I hope you don't think I was minimalizing your feelings. They most certainly are valid. Also, I'm not just pro Philips (I have my own pluthera of issues with them). You can choose a different COM port, but are pretty much limited to COM1 or COM2. There is no manual selection - PE scans your COM ports for the device.

The other thing to remember is Philips never intended PE to be released to the public - it was originally intended to be used internally for diagnosis only. It was developed with the advanced technician in mind; not the end-user. That, coupled with a distinct lack of a crystal ball have made what you're looking for impossible w/out totally redoing the software.

Like I said earlier - the Pronto NG is totally new software with forward thinking. It uses USB 1.1 and is recognized in your device manager with Windows default drivers as an HID (Human Interface Device). I can't wait to see all the posts from people who have failed to upgrade their PC's in the past five years and are running anything prior to Win98SE - it won't work with those 'cause there was USB 1.0 support at best ;-) - Oh - and I've spent hours myself trying to get a Belkin to work simply because I'm stubborn like that :P so I understand your frustration.

RC, go to the NG forum and you will see it there.

You can choose a different COM port, but are pretty much limited to COM1 or COM2.

Actually it looks at com1 and 2 but if they are in use by other devices and you have more com ports, it will continue looking until it finds an empty port, so it could work with com3 or4 but only if the previous ports are used.

Primo, RC GEEK is correct, the Pronto platform came out in 98, and they must have worked on it before that, back then there was no USB. Supporting USB means a total redesign, and that is what happened with the next generation Prontos TSU-3000 and TSU-7000.

didnt know about that PE wasnt supposed to be released to the public..

thanks Rc for the reply...

I attended the EHXpo in november 2003 and sat in on the Philips seminar on programming changes of the new NG software..

I spoke to one of the philips techs there about the problem I was having with the Epg on my Ipronto not working with my replay...

It seems to send 220044 instead of 204...

And it seems that we discovered a problem with the way the ipronto sends out it Ir commands...

he said it sends them in threes...and that the components always receive one of these Ir's not all 3...

So he felt that the replay was catching 2 of these 3 Ir signals that the Ipronto was sending...

So he said that maybe Philps should allow us more control over the delay in between each Ir being sent...

Hows that for input...

So your right they can never think of everything...

thats why I think this forum is sooooooo useful..

thanks RC...

Back in 2000 (was it really that long ago?) we found that the only Keyspan serial-USB adapter that would work was the high speed one. (We were trying to connect to an iMac through Virtual PC - you reckon you've got problems!!). Since then, touch wood, no problems. Check out my post ] here . You may be able to pick some help out of it.

yup, back in 98 when the first Pronto came out they did not even come with the cable, it was in 99 that they added it to the package and with the TSU-2000 that PE came on a CD in the box

So I went to Radio Shack....

So I bought the Usb to Serial cable...

So I had to change my com ports around....

So now I have two Usb to serial cable...

So It cost me a total of 50 bucks...

So now I can program my Pronto Pro from the laptop on my couch instead of my destop in the office..

So was it worth $50 bucks and all the headaches....

Hold on while I kick my feet up on the sofa and change my tv channel...

smile....

I had the same Reply problem. Spent some time with a very helpful replay tech on the line (from India) and figured out that it is a common problem fro Motorola boxes, and they had the wrong code set. Tried several - ok, many - alternates and found one that worked.
Then, it just took a bit of duct tape to stop the replay's IR blaster from inadvertently sending signals to my HD cable box in addition to the normal cable box it is supposed to control.
