Does anyone know if the Pronto can take this unit's IR code. I have a 90ESG and have been pretty much told I am "SOL" in terms of using ANY other remote with it. The 80ES does not have the GUI crapola and I'm hoping it works.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, this remote works fine with the 80ES - it will work with ANY Sony receiver except the VisionTouch/GUI models.

Er, I'd be careful about saying 'any except the VisionTouch'. I've got a 9000ES preamp with the 2-way remote (also used with the 50ES receiver I think) and have been having trouble getting codes into the Pronto. I think its primarily because the IR commands are only sent out briefly rather than continuously like with most other remotes. I've managed to get all of the source selection buttons into it after many attempts, but for some reason it just will not learn the VCR input selection. The Pronto does claim to have learned the command, but when I go back to Use mode it does nothing. My old Denon learning remote works okay and I've tried teaching the Pronto from the Denon with no success either. So for the moment I've given up and moved on to programming other devices into the Pronto.

I'm hopeful that other owners of the 9000ES / Pronto combination will have better luck with some of the buttons I can't program and vice versa so once the software is available we can share and come up with a complete composite of the 9000ES remote to post to the file area.

Sorry, I guess I should say "Any except VisionTouch or 2-way". Though I hear the 2-way models should work with older non-2-way remotes, and you may be able to learn from those.

As it turns out, back in November I bought the Sony STR-DA80ES Receiver (half price since its last year's model). Although the new 50ES was available, I resisted the temptation of its remote largely due to this web site (and in hind sight, one of my better decisions).
I have managed to input all of the functions except for some of the "internal" macros found on the Sony remote.

For example, (using the Sony remote), I press "TV" and the Receiver switches to "TV" and the TV (Sony XBR(2)96-32") turns on as well. The same applies when I press "Video 1" (for the VCR); the Receiver switches to "Video 1", the TV turns on and goes directly to Video 1 on the TV.

Unfortunately, despite a number of attempts, I can't get the Pronto to learn these "multi-function" inputs without creating a seperate macro via the Pronto. What's great about the Sony remote is that no matter where I leave the "Video" position setting on the TV (4 in total), it will always return to "Video 1" after only one sustained press. The same applies to the TV button, but not for "Video 2" or "Video 3".

I think some people here have overcome this problem and have managed to get the Pronto to learn these multi-codes without resorting to Pronto's macros. Any suggestions or do I have to wait for the software?

Otherwise, I'm very pleased with both the Pronto and the Sony STR-DA80ES and they seem to get along just fine.

My GA8ES (96/97) also has a remote with the "input macros", however the Pronto managed to learn *something* from them. I don't have a Sony TV to test the entire macro functionality of it, however when I use the learned signal it does indeed switch the receiver to the proper input.

This normally is a real problem for Sony owners who purchase universal remotes with no built-in codes. Interestingly, the Sony RM-AV2000 includes input-switching signals that aren't macros - they only change the receiver's input (yet still turn it on when it's off). These can be learned any remote that'll take other Sony signals (not all do).

It also includes a POWER TOGGLE code, unlike the standard remote which only has dedicated OFF and ON TO INPUT buttons. Both remotes were very handy in programming the Pronto.

Thanks for the responses.
Now I have a decision to make...
I have to decide if it's worth it to get rid of the 90ESG (and 20 Watts/channel) and beg my AV dealer to trade me for an 80ES, probably/definitely at a loss, so I can buy a $400 dollar remote Kick Ass remote...

I wonder why the 90ESG does not work. I figured IR was IR and as long as a remote can reproduce the signals sent out by the original remote then it Should Work!!! This little fiasco has me really pi**ed off at Sony....

Does anyone know of a way to "read" what the original remote is sending out (frequency, uniqueness, repeat patterns, etc..)?

Geo,
I have a Sony30ES with two way remote and have managed to teach the Pronto the Video1 and TV turn on commands BUT only at the template button level on the pronto. When I try to teach those same commands to the device menu on the Pronto it does not work. I get some of the same experiences you describe.Try programming at the template button level and see if it works.

I am waiting for the edit software to see what is really going on at the device menu level.
