I have a Kenwood 9010 DVD player that I want to switch into standby mode, rather than having to manually depress a power button to turn it off. The manual says the player is capable of doing this *if* you do it with the fancy Kenwood LCD learning remote - there is no facility with the remote that came with it (why??!!) I could buy the Kenwood LCD remote separately I guess, but I don't want to!. I was thinking about getting a Pronto in to solve my RC nightmare, it would be neat if some way I could get it to power down my DVD without having to get up and press a switch.

Thanks!

Scott,
I would suspect that once the Pronto software releases, that someone with the Kenwood fancy remote just might send you a Pronto config file that has the "learned" command that you need to do the job. Once you have the config file (and software of course) you'll be able to merge the command you need into your Pronto.
I think this answers your question.

Thanks for the reply.

In the worst case, and no-one has that combination of Kenwood remote and Pronto, would Kenwood be able to tell me what the actual IR code was? Could I then program it directly into the Pronto? Would I need the software also?

Scott,
I hope that all mfrs will provide all of codes for all of their products once ProntoEdit software is released. It only seems to make sense to me as their making codes available only helps to promote their products to people with Prontos or intentions of purchasing a Pronto.
Keep an eye out for code information availability via this site after the CES show 1/7-1/10/98. I think you'll find a solution to your problem.

Few CE manufacturers are willing to give out the technical information describing their IR codes and signalling protocol. We engineers usually end up reverse-engineering it (luckily it's rarely that hard). Beats me why they think it's worth 'protecting'...

I'm disappointed by Kenwood creating the situation in which you find yourself, to be honest. That shows a certain lack of respect for their customers, in my opinion. Remote power on/off is hardly an extra feature worthy of charging for...

The easiest way around it is to visit the store where you bought your DVD player, and see if they have the remote, and will let you learn that one code. Once you have it, you could use ProntoEdit to make it available here for others (if you were feeling generous :-)
