I have an RCA DSS unit, and will probably be purchasing an RCA DTC-100 for HDTV. This receiver will only be used to control the HDTV reception (sat and ota) for the TV, and I will keep the current RCA receiver for watching/taping other DirecTV channels.

I have the Cinema 7 remote controling the current RCA DSS receiver. Does anyone know which device code the DTC-100 uses? I don't want to be in a situation where they use the same device code and controling one will change the other unintentionally. Also, does anyone know if there is a switch to change the code (like the A code and B code some VCRs have) if there is a conflict?

Thanks in advance.

I have both an older RCA DSS AND a DTC-100. I use the older DSS to record using my PANASONIC REPLAY TV (using the serial data port for the RTV to control the DSS) and I also record using my JVC S-VHS VCR, using the IR Blaster. The DTC 100 uses the same code unfortunately. This could mean chaos, but I covered the IR receiver (with the JVC IR controller taped to it) on the older DSS with tin foil, since I only use the VCR or RTV to tune the box.

This may not seem like the most elegant solution, but it works. The best way to avoid this situation is to use two different brands of satellite receiver. The DTC100 is a vast improvement over the older box, by the way, but plan on installing an outdoor antenna if you want the HDTV picture. You could get a cheap second room receiver of a different brand to dedicate to taping if you don't like my tin foil solution.

ALSO: neither the Replay TV nor the VCR can control the channel tuning on the DTC100, because it requires an ENTER/OK after inputing the channel number, unlike RCA's older DSS boxes. The DTC 100 also omits the serial data port. Quite annoying.

Another tip: the DTC100 comes with a secret "commercial skip" function similiar to that found on RCA TV's -- which CANNOT be actuated from the DTC's own remote!! I used my old RCA remote in DSS mode to "teach" this function to the "enter" button on the Cinema 7. I find it more convenient to use the "OK/select" button in the menu arrow array for the "enter" function.

One last thing: I only use the Cinema 7 as my "backup" remote. I have an RCA RCU810 as my main. It is a MUCH BETTER REMOTE (1. preprogrammed for Replay TV, 2. Backlighting) and is only $50.

Thanks, Ironman. I just purchased the DTC-100 last night and haven't yet connected it. I do have a large antenna in the attic and am waiting for the new Boston transmitting tower to go on line. When that happens, I think I'll get good reception. I will try tonight to see what happens with the existing transmissions.

Thanks also for the info regarding the VCR controling the old RCA. I never thought of that. I purchased a JVC 7600 about six months ago and never used that feature so I forgot it exists. Since I will only use this second (really third since I have another receiver upstairs) receiver for recording I will probably try what you have suggested.

Since we're on the topic, I have heard that there are lots of functions that the Cinema 7 can perform for the DTC-100 that the RCA remote doesn't have such as toggling from HDTV to regular. The Starbase 314 and remote-hifi sites don't have any of these codes. Does anyone know what they are?

Thanks.

Thanks, Mark.

I had found that code on another site (avsforum). But, now that the DTC-100 upgrade has occurred, does anyone know the advanced code to toggle through the "fill and full" modes for 4:3 images? It is the fast forward button on the RCA remote when the remote is set for the DTC-100. I have learned it to the cinema 7, but would like the advanced code.

Thanks.

Advanced code 142 toggles through the three 16:9 images and/or the two 4:3 images. I too had learned the fast forward button before I found this advanced code. There are, six more advanced codes which change these image modes in ways I could not make sense of. They are: 126, 118, 076, 068, 092, 060. In addition there are now discrete advanced codes for HD mode-094, SD mode-078, Ant A-044, Ant B-084, and DSS-036. Another useful code is 074 for the Service mode.

None of these posts mention what device code you are using, I'm assuming you are using SAT/0566. I have added all these extra codes to the list on my site, if you can think of any more that I'm missing please let me know.

Mark:

Thanks for these codes. I have not tried the ones you mention (126, 118, 076, 068, 092, 069) yet, but I will and try to see what they do. But, I have another question, and maybe one of these codes is it. On the AVSFORUM someone indicated that with a pronto remote they found a code that locked the DTC-100 receiver so that it would not accept anymore IR input until it was turned off at the receiver, then turned back on. To me this seems a very valuable code since 1) I have another RCA receiver that I could possibly still use while using the remote and 2) if I were recording something with the DTC it would prevent my accidently changing channels. Does anyone know what the advanced code for this might be?

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Hey Steve,
If you give me the Pronto hex I can convert it into an advanced code.

When I cycled through all 256 codes, I did indeed find that my DTC100 stopped responding to the remote. Code 090 turns off the set and puts into a state where the remote will not turn it on, and you have to unplug and plug it back in to get it working again. Code 140 selects SAP if it is broadcast. Code 187 makes a mute icon appear in the lower right corner of the screen for several seconds, but does not affect my digital sound output (optical cable). I am using device code 0566.

There is a very good list of new DTC100 advance codes in the following thread at the avsforum:

By using advanced codes, which can be found on my site, under SAT device 0566.

Rob,

I have been following the AVSFORUM thread on advanced codes, but the person who listed all the advanced codes did so with a device code of 8. What does this mean? I use 0566 for the DTC-100, and if I try device code 0008, the receiver doesn't respond to any remote signals. Is 0008 a valid device code for the DTC-100? Is there something you can do to change the DTC-100 to another device code (sort of an A B device switch like my JVC VCRs have)? I would love it if there is, because my two sat receivers are both RCAs and both respond to 0566, so I can't use one of them without covering up the remote sensor as mentioned above by Ironman.
