Can anyone tell me exactly what a device code and an advanced function code actually are. When you press a button on a remote, does it send a device code followed by a function code. If so, does a device code of 0313 send a binary representation of 313 to the unit or is this 313 something OneForAll made up that then sends some other string of codes to the unit? Same question for advanced function codes.

If the OFA is capable of sending any code to a piece of equipment then I should be able to eventually determine a code to work a specific function. However, if the codes need to be available in the remote, and the remote is not set up to send a certain signal, and the remote is not a learning remote, then I'm probably out of luck.

Can anyone shed any light on the way these remotes work, or point me to a good web source that explains the inner workings.

Thanks,
Roger

remote that support several devices provide a list of the supported devices with codes next to them. These device codes are an arbitrary assignment by ONEforALL. Device codes simply tell the remote that the TV you want to use is a SONY, for example, and to use the internal database of SONY TV infra-red codes.

There are a basic set of functions all device needs. TVs, for example, need POWER, Volume, channel, mute, menu, numbers, and a few other function commands to be operate. ONEforALL arbitrarily assigns a basic set of functions to the buttons on the remote for whatever device you've set it up for. Along with this BASIC set, the internal database of function codes contains additional "advanced" codes that control extra functions you TV may feature. These codes aren't normally assigned to buttons on the remote. To utilize any one of them, ONEforALL will give you an (again arbitrary) advanced code number for each advanced function. This number is simply a pointer to where the infra-red code your device requires is in the remote's internal database.

Device code: an arbitrary pointer to a SET of Infra-red commands in the remote.

Advanced code: An arbitrary pointer to a SPECIFIC infra-red command within a SET of commands for a given device.

check out "http://www.tiac.net/users/wasser/OFA/" and also look at the links. This should give you your explanation. OneForAll also can be emailed for the codes for any supported device.
