Does anyone know if I can program the URC8820N to control the NAD 705 receiver. I have tried using the learning mode with no luck.

The NAD receivers use NEC1 IR protocol, device 135.124. Some UEI remotes have a setup code for NAD receivers, and it is Audio 0320. Unfortunately, the 8820N does not carry this setup code, although the older 8820B00 does. I do not see any setup code that could be modified to work either.

I'm not sure what you mean by learning mode. If you mean using the 975 command to learn the IR signals from the OEM remote, then the 8820N should learn these signals easily. If you mean the setup code search feature, then that's not going to work.

Thanks for the quick response! I tried 0320 and it didn't work, as you indicated.

I was referring to the process of "programming a learning key". Should I be able to program the 8820N's power button to learn the NAD's power button, as I wasn't able to?

I have a JP1 cable and have reads the guide for beginners, but it seems too complicated for me.

many uei remotes won't allow teaching or mapping advanced codes to power keys, just other keys.

We can make the JP1 stuff pretty easy here, because your situation isn't complicated. Ordinarily you'd need to use RemoteMaster to setup an upgrade, and IR.exe to upload it into the remote, but for this you can just use IR.exe plus the codes I'll post here.

Is your JP1 cable made by Tommy Tyler, and it is it a JP1.2/1.3 cable (has a red and green LED)?

You need to download IR.exe, and if you're using XP, download the FTDI VCP 2.06.00 drivers.  With Vista or Win 7, the FTDI drivers are built in to the OS.

Once IR.exe is started, download from your remote and save the results (so if ncessary, you can restore the remote to where you started.)

Then click on the Devices tab, click add and paste in the following:

Upgrade Code2 = 51 40 (Amp/0320) NAD 712 (RM v1.98)
 00 5A 00 FE C0 00 10 81 20 1E C1 00 4E 76 FC BC
 26 5E BE 7E 6E EE CE D6 B4 74 FE 66 09 E1 81 06
 EC 5B
End

Paste in everything from Upgrade through End and then clci OK.

On the General tab, assign 0320 to Audio or CD.

Then upload to your remote.

The codes posted here are for a NAD 712, but it appears that all NAD receivers use basically the same codes.  Here are the assignments of functions to buttons:

1Tape 1 Monitor
2Tape 2
3Video 2
4Video 1
5Aux
6CD
7Tuner AM
8Tuner FM
9Disc
VOL+vol up
VOL-vol down
Mutemute
CH+Preset +
CH-Preset -
Powerpower
PlayCD Play
StopCD Stop
RWDSkip<<
FWDSkip>>
PauseCD Pause
SleepDiscrete Off
MoveDiscrete On

Frustrated.... I am getting a "No response from interface" message. I verified that my parallel port is 378H and made sure that the IR Interface shows "JP1 Parallel" and is set for 378. I downloaded and installed the VCP drivers and have tried the parallel, serial and JP1.x options to no avail. My cable is a simple one - there's a 25 pin male connector at one end of the cable and a six pin female connector at the other end. The grey six strand cable has one red wire in the fifth position.

Do you have any thoughts about what the problem could be?

UPDATE: I read the forums and saw that my older cable may not work with my JP1.2 remote. Is that correct?

R

I should have been more explicit when I asked what kind of cable you had, and explained that the question was important.

A parallel interface cable is designed to work with UEI remotes that use an EEPROM. Remotes designed in 2005 or later use Flash memory instead, with a serial protocol to communicate with the computer. See this link for more details.
So your parallel interface cable won't work with a 8820, as you found.

It is possible to cheaply build an interface cable which plugs into a serial port, but most people buy the $29 cable made by Tommy Tyler which plugs into a USB port.

Thanks for the quick response! I'll order one from DIYGadget, as they offer free shipping to Canada.

Happy 4th of July to my southern pals!

If you're ordering a serial to JP1.2/1.3 cable, the DIYgadget cable is probably OK, although your next computer may not have a serial port.

If you're ordering a USB cable, I urge you to buy the one from Tommy Tyler. It uses FTDI chips, which have excellent driver support. The DIYgadget cables have (so I've read) poor driver support.

Ok. Now I'm really confused (I knew this wasn't going to be easy!).

I got the cable, installed the drivers, checked the interface (it worked), but the IR.EXE is showing "URC-8080/8090 B01 Producer 8" on the title bar. I tried upgrading using this profile to no avail. I can't seem to find a working 10820N/8820N RDF, although there is mention of such a file. The ones at the following link aren't apparently recognized by IR803.

[Link: controlremote.svn.sourceforge.net]

What next?

Roberta

P.S. I do appreciate all of the help!

The RDF files are being handled now under version control, and not all the kinks have been worked out yet.

Download the RDF (and Map/Image files for RM) here.

Remotes carry a signature, viewable on the Raw tab in IR after you've downloaded from the remote.  The 8820N signature is 1178.  A 8080 has signature HT80.

Please check to see that the remote is providing the correct signature.

Woo-hoo! Finally!

Thank you 3FG and Edmund. It worked like a charm.

Time to play some more..... :-)
