Hold P for 2 blinks then press 981. This will do a full reset so you can start over.

We need you to be more specific. When you say that you "programmed the Kenwood", what exactly did you do? Assigned a setup code? Which one and to which device button? Or do you mean something else?
What is "programming the Master power"? Using the 995 command? If so, that is a simple macro, but it will leave you in whichever device mode was specified last in the macro.
Did you perhaps use the 979 Home Theater command?
Next, when you did the 981 command, did the remote respond with 4 blinks? If so, the reset really has restored your remote to factory condition. That means you'll need to re-assign the setup codes, and your Master Power macro is erased.
You can blink back each setup code by using the 990 command. It would be a good idea to confirm that the desired setup code is actually in use.

I used the following set-up codes for my Kenwood VR305 - 31313, 31570, 31569, 30042, 30186, 30239, 30313, 30314. I programmed the "AUD" button on my remote.
I did use the 995 command. I did the macro using the tv, cable, aud sequence. It worked for the tv and cable but not the aud. I then switched the macro to go cable, tv and aud. The same thing as before. The aud didn't work.
I used the 981 command and the remote blinked 4 times. I was able to re-program the tv, cable and dvd but no aud.
Any ideas. Thanks for the input so far.

31313, 31570, and 31569 should all provide basic functions. When you assign 31313 to AUD, does the remote blink twice in response? Does the LED blink when you press Vol +/-?.
Many of the functions on the Kenwood don't have obvious places to go on the remote. Once you get volume and power working, we can tell you how to assign 5 digit EFCs to button to get functions like discrete inputs or Bass Boost working.
Try this experiment. With 31313 assigned to AUD, pres AUD. Then Press P, followed by the digits 60803. When you press the last digit (3), the power should toggle.

OK, here are lots of codes for VR model receivers. Perhaps some of them aren't available in the 305. To assign any of these semi-permanently to buttons of your choice (but not P or device mode buttons) follow the 994 command instructions. Note that you can assign them to shifted buttons, which are used by preceding the button press with a press of P. Functions EFC 0 | 60731 | 1 | 60859 | 2 | 60795 | 3 | 60923 | 4 | 60699 | 5 | 60827 | 6 | 60763 | 7 | 60891 | 8 | 60715 | 9 | 60843 | vol up | 60899 | vol down | 60771 | mute | 60675 | power | 60803 | 10+ | 60810 | video 1 | 60755 | video 2/monitor | 60794 | DVD/6ch Input | 62363 | MD/tape | 60819 | tuner | 60851 | CD | 60787 | phono | 60723 | bass boost | 61392 | source direct | 60688 | tuning up/FF | 61434 | tuning down/RW | 61306 | p. call up/track up | 61370 | p. call down/track down | 61242 | play/pause/band | 62298 | disc skip/A-B/100+ | 60714 | stop/auto | 61210 | multi control right | 61840 | multi control left | 61712 | sound | 61904 | setup | 62370 | listen mode | 60865 | disc down | 61320 | random toggle | 61713 | repeat mode | 60681 | program mode | 60697 | display toggle | 60746 | video 3 | 62338 | subwoofer | 62402 | av/aux | 60915 |

I would blink back the setup code for Audio using the 990 command, and see if it is still 31313.
A) still 31313 -- If vol and power both don't work, then re-assign 31313, and check again.
B) no longer 31313 -- Assign 31313 again, verify that vol works, press CBL/SAT, and see if that breaks it again. If it does, I would return it as defective. This fault is demonstratable in the store.
Basically, I would try to do a controlled experiment, demonstrating a repeatable seqeunce that breaks it. If it consistently breaks, the remote is defective.

i tried what you suggested. i can not get the 31313 or any of the other codes to work. this will be the 2nd remote i have exchanged. how can i demo this problem, if the store doesnt have a kenwood receiver in it? is this a common problem or just bad luck?

Please tell us the results of your tests. "Can't get 31313 to work" doesn't tell me anything. What did you get for the blink back of the setup code? Does the setup code persist when you press other device buttons?
And a basic question, when you assign 31313 to the Audio button, does it blink twice?
Like this-- to assign a asetup code: Press Audio Press and hold P until 2 blinks Enter 31313 You should now see two blinks, indicating that the remote accepted the setup code. Does it?
