I've had a URC-9910 sitting on the shelf that i'd like to bring into service. What would be first steps in bringing updated codes to such an old device? My HT is installed and likely won't change much soon - should i just worry about getting codes device-by-device or is there a way to update to a more current set of codes?

and...
Where would I go for the newb overview to modding this device?

many thx

Besides learning or typing in advanced codes where possible, there are a couple of ways to add new codes - by modem or by cable. In either case, you need to go to the JP1 forums at hifi-remote.com. There, you can download the software and device files to make wav files for your remote. Play back the wav files on your computer and hold your remote up to the speaker to download new devices to its modem. This is equivalent to the upgrades One-For-All would give you over the phone.

If you buy or build a cable for anywhere from $5 to $55 depending on your computer ports, OS and your soldering skills, you can download and upload all the devices in a matter of seconds with no wav conversion necessary. The cable method is much easier and much more powerful.

Read the beginner stickies at the above site and then post your questions there.

If you already have a cable, then you'd be crazy not to use it. The wav method is time-consuming and more complicated and error-prone. I don't know of an intro, but you basically just choose "Export to WAV" in the IR software and pick "Upgrade" on the remote. Making and formatting upgrades and using the IR, RM, and KM programs are in those beginner threads I told you about. You'll need to understand all of that stuff anyway for both cable and wav upgrades.

>>I've had a URC-9910 sitting on the shelf that i'd like to bring into service.<<

Resuming the quest to bring my URC9910 to life...

I've made a valid up and download with the current IR.exe and an old serial (that's the 32 pin fitting, right?) cable connection. Now i'm ready to prepping a spreadsheet to hold codes for my current av components, right?

But I don't have Excel so KM is out.

I downloaded RM but the current version looks like it a complete replacement for IR.exe - and that's a dead-end for me cuz i'm not getting valid connection from within RM's interface test.

I find I can run an older version of RM but now i'm going to have to juggle years old versions of the .exe and the issue of forward compatibility. Before I get too far down that rabbit hole, should I?

what's the best route to finding and old enough version of RM that it's just the spreadsheet prepper - but still have access to the current gen of av equipment. - are newer KM files going to be happy within older RM executables?

thx

My recommendation is to pretend that you never used JP1, and read the instructions. Most people use a combination of RM and IR, and that is explained in the Just How Easy Is It post. www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php.

You can and should use the latest released versions of both IR and RM. There is no need to use KM at all.

Still working on your URC-9910?

If it's back on your shelf, I might be interested in it.

If not, I hope it's fufilling your need.
