I setup one of these for the in-laws about 6 months ago to control a Sony LCD and Comcast HD cablebox. This past weekend, my father-in-law pressed mute which worked and when he pressed it again to unmute the TV it didn't unmute. Pressing other buttons caused the TV to become the video source instead of the cablebox. I went by yesterday and the remote seems to have lost all programming for the cablebox.

Should I spend the time to set it up again and assume this was just a hiccup or should the remote be replaced?

These are usually pretty solid. If you're certain it wasn't user error (sony tv will switch to tuner source automatically if you attempt channel change in tv mode), I'd attempt to exchange it if I were you.

Come to think of it, I had learned the Sat box channel + and - and number keys to the TV function of the remote to prevent this exact issue. I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it. That programming is gone because the TV tuner does become the source when channel + or - is pressed in TV mode.

It is out of warranty :(

Thanks

If you get it working again, you can just copy the CBL channels to TV mode instead of learning them like THIS

I realize this is an old post now but my remote lost all memory I had programed into it a couple of months ago. All default memory was there but nothing I had programed including keys I had used the learn function on and ones I copied from other locations. I had a very custom program and really hate to lose the info.
I first checked the batteries and they were good.
I love the remotes as I have two but there is some problem that causes them to lose memory if we could just find out what caused it. I bet we all did the same thing to cause it.

My customers and I have seen the same thing from time to time, and I have never been able to pin it down. But you may not realize you can make your own JP1.3 cable for about $5 and back up your remote config so you can load it back in should a mem loss occur. You also get a lot of new functionality when you program your remote from a PC/Mac. See hifi-remote.com for details.
