Ugh. I've recently acquired a new cable box that I've been trying to pair with my 8820, but I'm running into trouble on two fronts:

First, it's been so long since I initially set up the remote, I had to refamiliarize myself with the process through the manual. But...I can't get it to accept a code for the new device. [CBL/SAT] [Set(wait)] [enter 4 digit code] doesn't return the two blink confirmation, and nothing is entered, as confirmed by the 990 sequence. I puzzled as to why; is it a memory limitation? I only have two other devices programmed, but they have some key moves and learned commands.

Second, is there a known code for the device I'm trying to program, a Motorola DCH70 cable box? I would, of course, try all the listed codes, if I could get past the first problem above. However, there is another topic returned in a search here that implies that no code exists.

Hard to be sure what is wrong. One guess is the device type of the CBL/SAT button was altered earlier.
To restore the device type of CBL/SAT (does nothing if the device type had not been changed)
1) Long press of SET
2) Key in 992
3) Press CBL/SAT twice

After that, try again to program a motorola cbl setup code number, such as 0476.

is it a memory limitation?

No.
Programming a device button with a setup code does not take any extra memory.

a Motorola DCH70 cable box?

Most Motorola cable boxes use the same basic code set. The data I'm looking at says the setup codes for that code set in the 8820 are 0276, 0476, 0810 and 1376.

If it is the correct group of related setup codes, any one of those will work the basic functions of the cable box, but one is likely better than the others for advanced functions. If you manage to program the device button with one of those and it doesn't control the basic functions of the cbl box, the others won't either.

I don't know the specific mode (DCH70). I just know most models use that same code set.

Thank you very much, johnsfine!

Following the 992 procedure did the trick.

The DCH70 is an all-digital SD box deployed by Comcast.

It comes with a 3-device UEIC-based JP 1.3 remote. The first Motorola device code listed in its manual is 01376, so that's what I started with and the basic functions work.

One other question--I've also rediscovered advanced key codes and the hi-fi remote site. I haven't yet fully sussed out which device code is best, and which advanced functions work, but assuming x1376 is the best, I don't see any advanced codes listed for it. Will those from another device code table, say 0476, work? If they don't, I suppose I could just use the learning function as a backup.

I much prefer the shape of my 8820, not to mention that many of the keys on the Comcast remote are inactive at my level of service.

By working best with advanced functions, I meant which setup code has more of the advanced functions already programmed to appropriate buttons, so it doesn't need as many programmed via EFC keymoves (AKA advanced codes).

but assuming x1376 is the best, I don't see any advanced codes listed for it. Will those from another device code table, say 0476, work?

All the setup codes I listed (0276, 0476, 0810, 1376) process EFC numbers (advanced codes) exactly the same way. An EFC number used with any one of them will send exactly the same signal as that EFC number used with any other one (of those setup codes).

The trick is figuring out which EFC numbers are correct for advanced functions of the DCH70.

Also remember that an 8820 requires 00 in front of each thre digit EFC number when you use EFC numbers.

Thanks again. Got both the 8820 and Comcast remote set up to control my primary components, so I can pick up either and be in business!
