Saw a (new?) OFA remote at Walmart, but I can't remember the number. It was a 6-device unit, and the name ended in "nw". It was under $20. Can anyone name this remote? How close is it to being jp1 capable? I thought the buttons were well-labeled (for my needs, anyway).

My guess is that the "nw" suffix just means that it was specially packaged for Walmart.

Any idea which model that would be, and if it's jp1 capable?

I've seen a couple different ones at Wal-Mart. If I were to guess, from memory, I'd say it's this one: [Link: ofausa.com].

I know what it is. In fact, I just bought one today, and came here after having no luck finding any details on the new model on the web. It is the URC 6131nw, and is most likely the new version of the old URC 6131, which they also had one of. It's smaller than the old one, and not rounded, and includes the traditional DVD button pattern: the 4-button circle with a 5th center button.

I have many remotes, but this is my first One For All brand remote. I set it up for my 5 pieces of equipment, and it seems to work fine. I even moved some buttons around.

I wonder how long it will be before someone dives into it and posts info on its capabilities and what's changed since the original version.

PS: It was $12.86

How is it different from this remote [Link: ofausa.com]? Is it backlit? Are the button locations different? If it is different, could you take a picture and post it?
Thanks.

Here are photos of the front and back of the URC-6131nw. No backlighting. You can see the older URC-6131 linked in the previous post for visual comparison. I don't know if it has any different capabilities.

Thanks for the pics! Looks like I'll be keeping my old 6131 (extended with jp1)! I personally don't care much for the layout of this new one.

cpurick,
Are you directing the question to me or to ecarlson?
If the latter, I wouldn't be surprised to find that, even if the new 6131nw *does* have a jp1 connector, it's the new flash system of programming which isn't supported yet.

It has the holes for the JP1 connector under the battery cover (it even says JP1 next to the holes). I removed the 3 screws to attempt to open it and see what else is inside, but even with the 3 screws removed, it was firmly together, and I didn't want to break my brand new remote trying to pry it open.

Instructions for opening it are at
[Link: hifi-remote.com]

Using those will make it much more likely you can open it without breaking it. But it still isn't certain.

FYI: The new remote has a ~1/4" wide indent running down each side, and this creates a pair of raised edges, which can make it uncomfortable to hold. My solution was to fill these indents with a strip of 2mm self-stick craft foam, which can be purchased in craft stores for something like 79¢ for a 9"x12" sheet. It looks kind of cool with the padding added.

I used black craft foam, but it is available in many colors. It even comes in glow in the dark. Go to http://www.darice.com/ and search for "foamies sheet" (no quotes) to see a selection.
