Hi

I'm thinking of getting one of the new Kameleon remotes. The models available in the UK are significantly different in design to the US/Canadian models - I prefer the design/look of the latter.

I was wondering if there would be any problems with getting the 9960/9962 models to work in the UK. Am I right in assuming that the only other major difference (other than the physical design) would be the list of equipment models stored in the remote by default.

If it's a learning remote, then again I'd assume that the handset could be made to learn any other remote.

Or am I missing something?

Chris.

The learning capacity is very limited. There is one pool of learning capacity for the whole remote, not predivided by device mode. So you have enough capacity to learn all the signals from one typical device with nothing left over for other devices, or to learn just a few signals per device assuming you have basic support for each device in the built-in library.

The remote can be upgraded by JP1 cable or by .wav file. By those methods you almost certainly have the capacity to fully customize the remote even if you have eight different devices, none of which have built-in library support.

The JP1 software is free and can be used via .wav file with no extra purchases beyond the remote itself. But that software is a lot easier to use for its original purpose, upgrading the remote via JP1 cable, which requires the purchase (or build yourself) of the JP1 cable plus an adapter to help it connect to the 9960.

Personally I find the traditional remotes (with hard buttons), such as the 8811, a lot more practical than the Kameleons. They also cost a lot less. There too, your best choice is probably a USA model plus a JP1 cable.
