I am buying a URC-8811 for my home and was wondering about the "learning" function of the remote.

Can you only assign functions from the original remote to the L1-L4 buttons or can the URC learn each and every button on the original remote? This is what I am confused about. If only the L1-L4 buttons can be used for learning the original remote functions, would I have to buy a JP1 cable in order to program functions to each button?

Thanks!

You can teach to almost any key on the 8811, but you only have enough memory to learn about 25 or so commands for the whole remote.

Do you know if you are able to teach the navigation keys (i.e. up, down, left, right), like the keys used to navigate the menu?

Yes, you teach to the directional keys. Keys you can't learn to include Device keys, FAV, EXIT, SLEEP, SET, and LIGHT.
