Hi guys, I am new to this site and was looking for some help with a remote and VCR/DVD combo I just bought.

The Emerson VCR/DVD did not have its own code for the combo so I programmed the VCR side with the code 0000. I had to call customer service to program the DVD side and I believe that code is 0675.

The only real issue I have with this setup is the fact that when I enter the menu mode for the VCR, I am unable to use the directional keys to navigate through the menu. On the original remote for the combo player, the directional buttons are used to navigate through the menu. Up and down scroll down and right and left move deeper into each area of the menu.

Anyway, I was hoping that someone could help me assign some advanced codes for the navigation keys or maybe find another code for the VCR. I tried all of the Emerson VCR codes that were supplied with the remote.

Thanks

Rob,
First of all let me just thank you for assisting me with this.

I tried to enter the codes for navigating the menu, but the problem is that the original remote has two separate sets of buttons for channel up/down and the navigation keys. For example, when I enter the advanced code for down (557) and assign it to the down key for navigation, the down button now operates as channel down, but does not operate within the VCR menu screen.

Thanks again for your help!

I remember this model now, at least the EWD2202 version, it's just like the Symphonic WF802. We have a coupel of upgrades files for this in the JP1 group.

Here are some extra advanced codes for you from the VCR/0000 code:
092 VCR
096 DVD
035 tape speed
032 +100
048 slow

and here's some more from the DVD/0675 code:
105 +100
229 exit
228 last (prev ch)
133 surround
132 program guide
009 angle
193 zoom

I didn't find any additional arrow codes, so is it possible that the DVD arrows work the VCR's menu? If this is the case, you can always "key move" them from DVD mode to VCR mode.

I tried to do the key move from DVD to VCR, but that did not work. I think the original remote operates like 2 separate remotes. There are 2 separate buttons, 1 for DVD and 1 for VCR. When you hit either one of these buttons a light on the combo player will light up that corresponds with the side you are using. Once you hit VCR, the buttons on the remote only work with the VCR and vice versa. If I go into the VCR menu and then hit DVD on the 6131 and then try and navigate that does not work either.

If I buy a URC-8811 would I be able to teach the URC the original remotes functions?

Thanks for all the help!!

Did you map the advanced code first, then try to keymove? If you did that doesn't work, it needs to be done in one operation. For an example lets keymove "Angle" from DVD to VCR:

1. press DVd
2. press and hold SET for two blinks
3. enter 9-9-4
4. tap SET for one blink
5. enter advanced code, for Angle 0-0-9
6. tap VCR *extra step*
7. pick a key

And if you find that you want to copy a button, like one of the arrows, from DVD mdoe to VCR mode, you would do it like this...

1) Press and hold SET, 2 flashes
2) Type 994, 2 flashes
3) Press DVD, arrow, VCR, arrow, 2 flashes.

If you're patient, you could also try all 256 possible advanced codes (in the range 000 thru 255) for each side as this will undoubtedly reveal the missing buttons.

Well, I just wanted to thank all of you for helping me out one more time. I ended up calling customer service one last time and they could not figure it out (this was before the last 2 posts). The gentleman I spoke with advised me to purchase a URC-8811 because it can "learn" from the original remote. I decided to go with this advice since I had another use for the 6131. However, the DVD player I need it to work needs to be programmed into the remote. I sent the 6131 in to be programmed today.

I will be buying an 8811 shortly. Will this help me?

The best advice I can give you at this point is to get a JP1 cable. This will let you re-program your OFA remotes from your PC. If you send the 6131 in to be programmed they will substitute it for a JP1-compatible version.

So, if you get a URC-8811 and a JP1 cable, you will be able to use the 6131's learning feature to determine what the codes are for all of the buttons from all of your remotes. You can then use this info to create upgrades which contain codes that even OFA don't know about (as appears to be the case here).

As the whole JP1 process is a user-driven home-made process, you can't buy JP1 cables in the stores and the OFA customer support won't mention it to you either. I can sell you a cable for $15 and I can also sell you a URC-8811 for $19, and shipping for the pair is $4.

If, in the future, you find that you need more URC-6131 remotes, I sell versions of this remote that I have personally modified to be JP1 compatible.

I went ahead and purchased the 8811 before I received your last reply Rob, but have yet to buy the JP1 cable. I would really like to find the usb version of the cable or if not, I would need a separate adapter to convert the parallel cable to usb. My home computer is a laptop that has a busted screen so I only have usb connections. I'm going to look around for the USB cable, if you have any suggestions please let me know!!!

Thanks again for all the help and when/if I get the cable you will probably see me in the JP1 forum!!

You can buy the USB cable from either of the following two vendors:
http://www.hovisdirect.com and
http://jp1.filebug.com
