I have an 8811, but these questions are probably applicable in a wider context.

I just bought an HP z540 Media Center PC (like a DVR/PC combo). It has a remote that looks pretty much standard, but 9-10 non-standard buttons. Questions:

1) I have no idea what codes HP would use in their remote. Anyone have any idea how to find out if they use an existing remote code set?

2) If they use a non-standard set, what would your next step be? There's not enough memory to program every button from their remote to my 8811 (down to the 1-2-3 keys, record play stop, etc)

2a) Would you buy a new remote that could learn as many codes as I give it? (and which would you go with)

2b) Or would you try to upgrade it, either by mailing it in, or buying a JPL cable and doing the JPL thing? (I'm an advanced techy, but I don't want to burn 20 hours of my life on this thing)

Any and all thoughts are appreciated! Thank you!

There is a common PC Media Center code set. I think HP uses it, but I'm not sure. There is a JP1 upgrade posted for it. But I don't think the 8811 nor other OFA models has it built in.

JP1 with your 8811 will get you the best results. I expect it should take a lot less than 20 hours, but I can't be sure of that.
