Is it true I can upgrade my 9960 with a WAV file?
Without a special IR cable?

There is no possible way I can upgrade it with a lan line phone during work hours.
Allthough there was a day a couple days ago, friday after Thanksgiving, I was off, and was ready upgrade, I called them and guess what, they were off also...

I know there is new codes on the website, but I guess the remote at some point does need to be upgraded???

Actually I am not REAL happy with the 9960, and was thinking of the Sony 3100 or the Harmony 659....

Right. If you can get or create the right .wav file.

Right.

I guess you're referring to the fact that customer support will play the .wav file over the phone but won't email it to you, and the fact that the process may be picky about your type of phone connection.

I know there is new codes on the website,

So far as I have ever heard, the .wav files you can get from the website are only for non USA models of the remote. USA models, such as the 9960 are supported only by the phone method.

I guess the remote at some point does need to
be upgraded???

The "upgrade" for that remote just refers to loading a .wav file. And it can just add a few setup codes (selected for the specific device YOU have a problem with). There isn't any more complete "upgrade".

I think the 9960 is still better than those, but their refusal to email the .wav files does make it inconvenient.

I posted a few .wav files for the 9960 at:
[Link: hifi-remote.com]
I might post others if you can be clear about which you want and I happen to have easy access to the data. Also, each of those files is for ONE device and loading a .wav file replaces the previous one (they don't merge). So if you want more than one added setup code, it needs to be made specifically for your set of devices.

You can make your own .wav files, which has significant advantages over getting one from OFA or from me. But it does require a good understanding of the JP1 software. You don't need the cable, and the software is free. But there is actually more to learn to use it via .wav file than to use it by cable.

Just did a forum search and couldn't find any thread pertinent besides this one.

Have a URC-9660 I purchased a few months back, but just had my TV die on me and will be replacing it shortly, doing a lot more research there.

Anyway, to my question, I'm now aware that WAV files can be played back for the 9660. Email support has been good from OFA for my unit, but the programming sequence is horrendously long and complex given the number of codes I have to key in to drive my Yamaha receiver.

I'm looking for a program where I can key in the codes (or model numbers) then generate the programming WAV file for this remote. Any ideas?

There is nothing that simple that I've heard of. But there is a collection of (free) programs that together can do that job. All are available from the JP1 forum.

1) RM (RemoteMaster). This lets you open and view any of the upgrade files from the large collection in the JP1 forums.
You can tell RM to convert the upgrade to be for a 9960 instead of whatever model it was originally posted for.
You can view which functions are assigned to which keys and rearrange them to your preference.
Finally, you tell RM to copy an internal description of the whole upgrade to the clipboard for IR.EXE
You could also use RM to build upgrades from scratch based on data from other sources, such as CCF files via DecodeCCF.exe

2) IR.EXE. With this program you create an "new" eeprom image for a 9960, then "add" upgrades one at a time from the clipboard (where RM put them).
IR can accumulate several upgrades into one eeprom image (RM works with only one upgrade at a time).
Then you can tell IR to produce a .wav file from the upgrades portion of that eeprom image.

3)IrToWav. This program needs to be installed, but you don't directly use it. IR.EXE uses it to do the work of creating the .wav file.
