I just picked up a URC-8810 at the local Walmart. I've been able to use advanced codes no problem, but not the learning function. Everything seems to go fine until the end. When I place the two remotes head to head, as instructed, and press and hold down the key to be learned by the 8810, the LED never blinks. I've tried this a number of times with various remotes, with no result. I've even completed the final step, holding down the SET key again, just to see what happens, and, of course, nothing is stored. Am I missing something or is it just a defective unit? Is there anything I can do to test or remedy this before simply returning it? Thanks to all.

Getting impatient for a response, I searched the archives, and found the answer from The Robman. I'll reproduce it for the benefit of others:

"If learning is not working.... I suspect you are not doing it properly, most likely because the printed manual is hopeless.

Here's the correct learning method...

1) Position the 2 remotes head-to-head
2) Press and hold the SET button, 2 flashes
3) Type 975, 2 flashes
4) Press the relevant device mode button (eg, TV, VCR, etc)
5) Press the URC-8810w button that you're programming. At this point the red LED will start flashing rapidly...
6) While it's still flashing, start pressing the button on your original remote. At this point the URC-8810w red LED will stop flashing, but KEEP PRESSING the original remote button until the URC-8810w's red LED gives 2 short flashes.
7) If you have more buttons to program, repeat steps 4 thru 6.
8) When you're finished, press and hold SET and wait for 2 more flashes."

This was exactly the problem. The key is to have the two remotes head to head at the beginning (step 1) and most importantly, to press the button on the original remote WHILE the LED is still flashing (step 6). The manual is very misleading in this regard. I'd be surprised if they don't get a ton of these returned.

Bought the same universal remote and it took me a while to get em right. The above instruction worked for me. Out of 5 devices, I can control 4 of em. I'm having problem with my satelite receiver, ADTH 8009IR. Codes isn't listed for this device. I contacted One4All for the codes and hopefully I can get it to work. But I'd appreciate any help you can give me...

Thanks for that post above on learning procedure for the 8810. Could you help once again? I made one mistake in programming using the procedure. Instead of moving on to different buttons on the same device, I started the procedure over for each button. After awhile, the remote stopped the double blink ...so when I pushed the set and got that double blink...the learning didn't take place. Did I use up the memory with the mistake I made in the procedure? I programmed with codes my satelitte box, my DVD, but had to use learning for my projector, my HDTV STB, and my Sony HTIB reciever. There where some button I could have done without if I'd known I'd run out of memory. Is there a way to clear the "learned" buttons by device, so I can start over? Any suggestions would help. Thanks

Yes!! you have run out of memory, the 8811 can only learn about 25 commands for the whole remote. You can't clear a single device learned commands, it's either a single key or the whole remote that can be cleared.

I ran across town to my local walmart only to discover they don't carry any OneForAll remotes bigger than a 6131.

I guess I'll shop online. Any recommendations?

An urc-8811 (available online) is the same remote (slightly higher price) as the urc-8810w (used to be) at Walmart.

Either one is much better with a JP1 cable than without.

I haven't checked lately, but two online vendors who used to sell 8811 with JP1 cable (discounted vs. buying the two items seperately are)

Actually, you can clear learned commands for a whole device.

The sequence is below:

1. Press and hold SET until the LED (red light) blinks twice, then release SET.
2. Enter 9 - 7 - 6.The LED will blink twice.
3. Press the device key once where the learned feature is stored(e.g., TV).
4. Press the device key in step 3 again (e.g., TV). The LED will blink twice after the second press.

That may work on the newer remotes, but not the 8811/8810w that this thread is about.
