I just picked up this remote (my 4th different one in 2 months - I think the remote gods hate me). I was trying unsuccessfully to download codes to the remote over the phone from OFA customer service but kept getting an error message. I did everything they suggested - I took the DSL filters off of the phone line, tried a manufacturer's reset, etc. but to no avail. I even called my phone company to test the phone line for any possible interference. Has anyone else had this problem with this model or any other OFA remote? Thanks.

I live in a 36 unit apartment, never had any problems downloading. Try putting the earpiece up to the front of the remote over the LCD, instead of over the hump in the back.

Thanks edmund. They suggested that too and it didn't work. I think they're getting sick of hearing my voice by now over there. I'm sort of wondering if this is a pretty common problem or if I bought a defective remote. Anyone know offhand what BlueDo.com's return policy is like? Or if I should just go ahead and spend more money on a JP1 cable?

Well, considering the money that we're talking about for a JP1 cable is just $14 and it will make your remote infinitely more useful, I would say go for it.

As for your phone troubles, are you using a modern digital phone by any chance? If so, these won't work. Also, it's quite possible that the modem inside has become disconnected as the wires connecting it are very thin.

Another option is to use the JP1 software without the cable. Make your own .wav file for the upgrade you need and load it from your PC's speaker rather than your phone.

I don't know that you'll get any different result from the PC's speaker than from the phone, but I think it's worth trying. It also is easier to retry, since there isn't a second person involved.

Are you confident you followed the instructions to get your 8910 ready to receive the signal right before it was sent (not so soon that it gives up nor so late that it missed the beginning)?

What setup code(s) were they trying to send? What device(s) are they for? To make your own upgrade without decoding any learned signals you need some other source for the information. Probably someone here already has that information and can identify it either by setup code number or by device type, brand, and model.

Nope, it's like a 5 year old Radio Shack cordless phone. Is there an easy way to check the modem or the wiring inside?

Actually johnsfine, they told me the codes I needed (assuming they're the ones that actually work). One is for a Philips DVD player (0671) and a Sony receiver (1758). Obviously they didn't come programmed in the remote. I don't know a lot about JP1 software, could you direct me to a site with instructions for how to create .wav files for the codes I need?

What model DVD player, and are you sure about that 0671?

Most Philips DVD players use DVD/0539, which is in the 8910 and in the 8910's manual and I expect you tried it already. Are you really sure it doesn't work? It's best to test DVD players with basic transport commands, such as PLAY rather than with the power key. There are several reasons that the basic transport keys might work when other keys such as power don't. You're a lot closer to solving the problem when you know a setup code in which some keys work.

I tend toward a more Dilbert like approach to IR topics: Solve the technical problem (upgrade an 8910 without a JP1 cable) even when it makes no sense to solve the technical problem.

Rob's answer is the one that makes sense here, but I'll still provide more details if you want to go the harder .wav file path.

OK, that's the problem right there, the modem process only works with land line phones. I'm surprised that customer service didn't tell you this, this should have been the first question they asked.

Thanks Robman but it IS hooked up to a landline. It just happens to be a CORDLESS phone. Believe me, I even asked THEM if it made any difference whether I used a cordless phone or not and they said it didn't. And that cell phones were no good.

But at this point it looks like you may be right about investing in a JP1 cable. I was just trying to avoid having to spend another $15 just for the sake of convenience. But I appreciate the help from everyone. Thanks.

I used the wrong term, what I meant by "land line" was a wired phone, as opposed to cordless. But regardless, and you can trust me on this, the rewards that you will get from JP1 will GREATLY exceed the $15 you spend to join the ranks.

Look closer, it even says "JP1" right under the pins.
