I was considering the URC-8910 remote and when
looking at the reviews I read that it has JP1,
which from what I could infer means it can hook
up to a computer to help program it. Can someone
give me more details on what it is exactly and
how it works?
[Link: hifi-remote.com] Also does the cable come with the
remote?
No.
If not, where do you get it and what
is it called?
See above link.
the codes for the device had to be already in the remote.
That's the common way of using the 8910. But is has a bigger library than typical universals of other brands that depend on built in libraries. And you can get upgrades over the phone from OFA customer support that add support for missing devices, or you can do a better job of adding such support yourself via JP1.
Will the learning abilities of this remote allow me to use my
original remote to program the keys for this one?
Learning in the 8910 is quite accurate (a little better than other brands of learning remotes). But it is very limited in capacity. You have enough capacity to learn all the signals from one typical original remote or learn several signals each from 8 original remotes. But you don't have enough capacity for some single original remotes with a lot of functions, nor enough to use learning as the primary programming method for more than one device.
But some devices (including most Philips devices) have a problem when the universal is programmed by learning. The symptom is that each key won't work twice in a row. You can use each key any time it WASN'T the most recently used key.
You don't have that problem when the Philips device is supported by built-in setup code or by phone upgrade from OFA or by JP1, only when it is programmed by learning.
