I just bought a Kameleon and so far everything works great EXCEPT it will not work with my Yamaha Surround Receiver. I tried all codes available and even tried the learn feature but no luck. Another problem if the original Yamaha remote has 2 power buttons. One if for power on and the other for standby (off), the Kameleon only has one power and no standby. I know i can use any button for the standby but since I can't get it to learn the functions I am at a dead end. Has anyone else had problems like this and if so is there a way to get it to work? I have a Sony Commander currently (3000) and it works fine but I thought I would gove this one a try but so far have been let down on what it can control.

Thanks!!

I checked the OFA web site for setup codes and they list 0176, 1176, 0186 and 1375 for Yamaha Audio Receivers for the 9960.

Most of the data I have from other sources matches 0176. Try 0176 again (I expect you tried it already) and see if any of the functions work (don't just test power). If you can tell us a few functions that work, that makes it much easier to tell you how to get the remaining ones.

Learning should have worked. I don't know whether your 9960's learning memory was full or whether you did the process wrong, but I think it's VERY unlikely that your Yamaha remote has a signal your Kameleon can't learn.

But you shouldn't need learning, even for the second power button. Once we're sure which code set it is we can tell you how to define KeyMoves for missing functions.

You should also post the exact model number of the Yamaha. Usually that doesn't help, but it's worth trying. Someone might have model specific information.

Ok,I will give it a shot. If my memory is correct it is a Yamaha 5560 (I will check later tonight to be certain) When you say the memory could be full; to be sure I cleared everything back to factory defaults before trying a second time and entered the code for my DVD player (worked fine) and my Directv rec. was default (worked fine as well). I will report back once I have tried again. :) Thanks again!

How?

I'm not sure about the 9960, but for most models OFA does not document the method to clear to factory defaults. They document a clear method that only clears some of the settings.

On typical models the factory default level clear is done by a long press of the programming (Set or Magic or whatever) key followed by keying in 9 8 1.

I'm sure details of clearing the 9960 are described in some thread in this forum.

The Yamaha HTR-5460 and HTR-5540 both use the same commands as most other Yamaha receivers (Tuner/0176). I don't see any data on a 5560, but chances are it uses those same commands as well. (The letter part of the model number, HTR in the ones I found might be more relevant than the number, so if that isn't HTR what is it?)

The most consisten commands are probably VOL+ and VOL-, so make sure you test those in setup code 0176.

It said use code 977 for default settings and 980 to clear all custom programming.

My model is a HTR-5640. I started from scratch again and used 0176 and I can get the volume to work but no other functions will. I try assigning functions again to some buttons and see what happens.

Unless you have a lot of difficult to reproduce programming in the remote, you should start over with a 981 reset, so you're sure it's a clean start (980 isn't)

used 0176 and I can get the volume to
work but no other functions will.

Tomorrow I'll check a few sources to see what the commands might be in a device that matches 0176 for vol commands but not most other commands.

Do you know how to test EFC numbers with the 9960?

Here are all the EFC numbers for all commands from a CCF file for the HTR-5460

117 ch+
121 ch-
119 a/b/c/d/e
247 vol+
251 vol-
244 mute
103 +
107 -
100 TV
104 AUX
062 Movie 1
066 Movie 2
125 DolbyDTS
252 Menu
177 DVD

Here are a few from the HTR-5540
248 On
246 Off
250 Power toggle
102 Menu

To test an EFC number, first you need to select a device mode (press the device key) that was programmed with the appropriate setup code (0176) then:

1) A SHORT press of the programming key (I forget what that key is called on the 9960. It's the same key you use a long press of to start things like the 981 reset).

2) Key in the first two digits of the EFC

3) Aim the remote.

4) Press and hold the third digit of the EFC while you look to see if it has any effect on the device.

Once you know which EFC numbers do what you can program them onto keys using using "KeyMoves". Or if you need to program too many you can create an upgrade for a new setup code and convert that to a .wav file and load that into the remote.

To make sure you are doing the EFC test right, try the EFC for VOL+ first. You already verified that 0176's built-in VOL key works and I'm pretty sure the EFC number I quoted earlier for VOL+ will send the exact same signal as pressing the vol+ key. So if that doesn't work you're doing something wrong which you should figure out and fix before wasting time on other EFC numbers.

I have a 9962 and a Yamaha 5760, I had to call OFA and after trying a bunch of things they upgraded my codes to include one for a 5740 (code 1276?) via the phone method. That didnt work initially but after they did a 'descramble' (factory reset?) , it worked fine it just cleaned all my learning and macros.
