Hi,

I was wondering, after having met a very strange operator menu when testing random advanced codes on a Toshiba 43PJ93 rear projector, if this could be harmful to the TV ?

Any opinion or exerience ?

thanx.

Waldok,

Well that depends whether or not you did anything to the tv while it was in the "strange operator menu". That menu you are referring to is called the service menu and is designed to be used only by technicians and other people trained in how to use it. You might want to ask this question at http://www.hometheaterforum.com in the hardware forum. I've seen this sort of thing discussed there before.

HTH!

Eric,

Thanx for your answer. Sur I did something to the TV while it was in this weird service mode : I switched it off immediately :-))
Luckily, everything was back to normal when I switched it on again later on.

If I get you right (and that'a also what I thought without being completely sure), trying advanced codes manually cannot alter the TV behaviour as long as nothing is done when special modes are encountered ?

The problem is that you may come across a service mode that can only be turned back by entering another advanced code...then what if you enter a wrong code that does change something within the service mode...

I think I'll be calmer on this kind of stuff with the TV from now on... ;-)

thanx again for pointing me to hometheaterforum.

Be careful. I did in fact screw up my television trying to manually explore for advanced codes. Apparently I happened upon code that completely resets everything in the device EEPROM. So I lost some feaures (i.e. PIP no longer worked). Fortunately, I already had the service manual and was able to manually go into the service modes and correct the problem. This was a single code that did this, not hitting other buttons after I entered the service mode....

My thread "C7 locked up..." confirms the danger. Searching codes tripped my Sat recievers remote mode. DISH is sending me a new remote to remedy it(one that has mode changing capabilities). I'm sure a fix is forthcoming but there is no doubt why OFA doesn't openly support the code search principal... to the normal consumer it's a can of worms. However, for the techie and tenacious it's all like an adventure. Nothing will keep me from finding out what I'm not getting from the device codes, even if it does ruin my system.
Now that's a junkie for you!

Yes, I also like to explore devices secret features and I hate it when some so-said technicians won't let customers have all the information on the product they bought.
Still, I paid a reasonable amount of money for this device and I enjoy too much watching my DVDs on the big screen to risk ruining it (which would probably expose myself to very dangerous and unpredictable wife reaction ;-))

I need to know a bit more before I go on with these codes.

If anyone has the same Toshiba and knows more, please give some information.
