I am trying to find advanced codes for the URC-7800 Cinema 7 with my Sony STR-DE935. I have reviewed all the posts and have not heard of anyone successfully getting the sound fields to work. I also am having problems getting the cursor mode and cursor up,down, left, and right to work. The only success I have had is using the learning keys for this. Can anyone confirm if there are advanced codes for this? I have tried the ones from [email protected] for the Sony de925 but they won't work. The original remote is the RM-LJ302. Thanks in advance.

The Sony line of receivers are not very well supported by Cinema device codes. My 825 sound fields were not found to react to any advanced code. I was able to get all the basic sound controls and device selections to work, and even discrete power on and off. On my 825, once I've decided which sound field I prefer for a particular device they are remembered by the receiver. For this reason the lack of sound field selections on my Cinema doesn't really bother me. Whe I do want to tinker with the sound fields there's always the original remote in a drawer to use.

"Sorry, but sometimes there aren't any advanced codes!"

David,

Thanks for the reply. I can understand what your're saying. I just was wondering if anyone had been able to get the sound fields working. Overall I can't complain. I can control all my other devices including my DVD player and it is a lot easier to use than the original. Plus I don't have the annoying problem of the original changing my cable box to channel 9 every time I access a function. Since my TV doesn't have any audio out connections I use the coax connection to connect to the VCR. I have a macro set up to turn on the receiver turn on the VCR and the TV and automatically put the remote in the cable functions. This allows me to use the receiver for the audio. My wife and kids find it easier to work with. I guess we always want more than we can have.

Thanks anyway.

I did a little digging in the Pronto forum and found a DB930 CCF file that contains learned codes for most of the sound field functions. I dumped it to ASCII and can now see the exact bit pattern that the "A.F.D." button sends when it is pressed. Is this of any use? Is there any way to "fool" the Cinema 7 into sending the exact bitstream that I want without manually learning it?

No. You'll have to teach the sound fields from a working remote like the Pronto or your original Sony remote. My Pronto could learn the codes from the sony remote, but my Cinema7 couldn't. Odd thing though... the Cinema7 COULD learn the sony sound field codes from the pronto. Go figure!

David,

Can you tell me how to learn the codes from the original remote? I have been able to teach the cursor functions but have been unable to figure out how to teach the Cinema 7 how to select the sound field option and then choose one of the sound fields. I would be happy to teach it just one of the options.

Regards

Kevin,

Try the learning sequence in a room where the Sony Receiver isn't. The remote is 2-way, and what the receiver sends out may interfere with the process.

If your remote is like mine, you have to call up the sound field list, scroll thru it, and be ready to push the "enter" button to set the sound field you want. The Cinema learning sequence will time-out if you're not quick enough, so do all those steps except the last one before pushing the button on the Cinema you want the sound field taught to. My Sony remote also times-out if buttons aren't pushed soon enough, so the whole process is very timing critical.

I have actually never taught the sound field codes directly to a Cinema. I taught them to my Pronto, then used the Pronto to teach them to my Cinema. The Pronto was more forgiving in the timing process, and so it was simpler for me to do it that way. I'll bet you can use the Cinema, but you'll have to be very coordinated.

Good luck,

Dave

Kevin,

I tried for hours to get my Cinema 7 to learn from the LJ302, and had no luck. From the pronto dump, it looks like there are several codes that it sends out when it send the "A.F.D." command: maybe the Cinema 7 can't deal with this. Best bet is to go to your local electronics store and borrow the remote for the DE835 for a while. I learned the AFD, 2 Channel Stereo, and Sounds Field +/- keys, and I think I know have pretty good control over the 930. I just wish I could back them up to a PC in case I ever want to start over from scratch on the remote.

Rob,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try borrowing the DE835 remote and see if it works. There are only a few sound fields that I use frequently so even if I could learn a few I would be happy. Until then I'll just have to keep the original handy. The only time it becomes a problem is when watching TV. The Sony remote likes to change my cable box to channel 9 every time I access a function.
