that page lists 2 procedures, one for programming in an advanced code, and one for programming in an advanced code on a "shift" key. but i have no idea which i want ;) can someone please define a shift key?

my problem is that i cant get a power macro working for my tv. it turns on my receiver every time but for some reason putting tv power into a macro only turns on the tv about 1/4 of the time. i think its just a problem with my tv. anyway, i wanted to try putting a macro on and a macro off key on the remote using the discrete on/off codes. for some reason the discrete codes wont work anyway, and even the regular advance code for power on/off isnt working. i am using code 0054 for the tv but the advance codes listed dont seem to work.

edit:
well it seems i cant get any advance code to work. i even tried some for my vcr and they have no effect. what am i doing wrong? i am getting the codes from the same device code that i setup my equipment with. im using the test method to check them (press device key, press setup, type code) and i cant get any of them to work. im using a kameleon remote.

You didn't mention which remote you are using, so I just picked the manual for the 15-1994:
