As the subject suggests, I have an Onkyo TX-DS797, and the RS remote, 15-2133, the Kameleon, will only do limited functions such as power, volume, mute, etc. I am unable to use menu functions or access the surround settings. Does anyone have any advice?

I don't think you can get very much for that without a device upgrade.

A device upgrade is easiest and best via a JP1 cable (with which you can make your own upgrade assigning whichever keys you like). I don't know if you can get an appropriate upgrade via phone or wav file for the 2133.

You should have mentioned which setup code partially works. I assume it was AUDIO/1298, but I'm not sure and most of those who might have helped sooner wouldn't even have that as a guess.

Every Onkyo TX-anything I've seen data on is either NEC1:210.109 or some combination of NEC1:210.109 plus NEC1:210.108.

AUDIO/1298 is mainly NEC1:210.43 with a few functions in NEC1:210.109 and NEC1:210.108. Notably the vol and channel keys are in 109 and the power key is in 108.

I also see the Onkyo's surround-mode key is the surround key in Audio/1298, so it's strange that you mentioned that as one of the problems (maybe you meant something other than the surround-mode key. I have no clue what's involved in "surround settings").

I don't know of any other setup code built into the 2133 which has any of the commands for the Onkyo TX devices. (Setup code 0135 in many other UEI remotes is closer to fitting).

BTW, have you tried learning from the orriginal remote? I tend to assume non JP1 users have run out of learning memory and ought to get JP1, but you might be one of those who haven't filled learning memory yet.

Thanks for the reply. No, I haven't filled learning yet, but the OEM remote's chip stopped working. So my only way to get access to an OEM remote (Onkyo # RC-460m) is to go to a retailer and teach my remote on their floor. I suppose that's an option.

I'm a newbie to the JP1 cable concept. I'm sure I could do it, but I'm going to have to do some research. I'm going to probably look around for a pre-made one. Also, I read somewhere that I'll have to solder a receptor on my remote to mate with the cable. Is this true? If anyone knows any URL's to good how-to's on this, please let me know.

Thanks,
Eric

You don't need to go back to the store, because there are a couple of ccf files for the TX-DS797 here at RC, here's a link to one of them. You can then use a program that John wrote, called CCF2EFC, to convert that file into useful codes.

You don't need to solder anything into the Kameleon, in fact, if you did so you'd block the batteries. There are 2 special adapters you can buy that will let you use JP1 with the rmeote "as is", you can get them along with a JP1 cable from these 2 URLs:

http://www.hovisdirect.com
http://jp1.filebug.com

You can info on JP1 itself here:

Rob, thanks for the great info. I ordered an adapter from JP1 Cables. I'm going to head to radio shack this morning to get the materials for my actual cable.

I downloaded that file, however I can't find the other program you mentioned (CCF2EFC) in any of the file links on this site or others. Do you have a link?

Thanks again for your help,
Eric

EDIT: I found the CCF2EFC file, but am still open to any pointers! ;)

Which CCF2EFC did you find? The old one here in RemoteCentral or the new one in the Yahoo JP1 group? The new one needs the DecodeIR.DLL also in the Yahoo JP1 group.

The old one probably gets these signals right. It's a little less accurate distinguishing NEC1 from NEC2 than the new one, but being more accurate about that may not help in this case (see below) you may need to test to see whether you need to mix NEC1 and NEC2 or whether one of them will work.

To use CCF2EFC, drag the icon for the .ccf file and drop it on the icon for ccf2efc.exe. That will create a new .txt file (same name as the ccf). Open the .txt file and look at it. Find all the lines that look like:

Left "return" "Learned" (NEC1):210.108:84 EFC=100
Vol- "Learned" (NEC2):210.109:3 EFC=187
Mute "Learned" (NEC1):210.109:5 EFC=184

The lines that look like
Vol- "Learned" (NEC1):184:154 EFC=255
are for some other device. Ignore anything that doesn't have the ":210." part.

With the JP1 tools you can easily build an upgrade for NEC1 or NEC2 and specify a device of 210 and a subdevice of 108 or 109. You probably should build those three or four simple upgrades and load them into your remote for test purposes to see if you really need both NEC1 and NEC2 or whether that is something strange in this CCF file (usually Onkyo is just NEC1).

When you get NEC1 vs. NEC2 wrong a short press of the button will work anyway. The difference between NEC1 and NEC2 only matters for long presses (so it's most important for things like VOL keys).

Once you know what signals you need, it's time to combine 108 and 109 and maybe combine NEC1 and NEC2 so you have a single device mode that does the whole job (rather than three or four setup code upgrades that each do part of it). Then ask in the JP1 group, because that combination might be tricky.

Later edit: In the text "(NEC1):210.108:84 EFC=100"
NEC1 is the protocol name
210 is the device
108 is the subdevice
84 is the OBC
100 is the EFC

The OBC and EFC are redundant information with each other. In JP1 tools you can choose to provide either the OBC or the EFC. The tool will compute the other. CCF2EFC provides both because non JP1 users can only use EFC for UEI remotes and can only use OBC for Prontos and other non UEI remotes.

1. download the ccf.
2. download CCF2EFC, unzip.
3. Drag and drop ccf onto unzipped ccf2efc.
4. search result for your device
5. each button will denote protocol, device, subdevice (if needed), and EFC values. You'll need those to enter into KM
6. read the various readme's packaged with KM (Kemapmaster.zip), also JP-1 for beginners about how to set up KM.
7. SAVE your resultant KM file for when you get your cable and adapter.

In this case, you absolutely need the newer version of CCF2EFC because the Pronto file is a "P2" file and the old version only handles "P1" files.

Here's a link to the current version of CCF2EFC:
[Link: groups.yahoo.com]

And here's a link to the DecodeIR DDL that you will also need:

There are a couple of device code files (for Onkyo 787 and 898)on the JP1 group site. These should give all or nearly all the codes for a 797 without having to mess with ccf files. I have all the codes for my Onkyo 898, if you need any let me know. Good luck.
