I just purchased a Radio Shack 15-2104 remote control which is working well. But I've read references to the keypad becoming "scrambled" and that this can be fixed. I haven't been able to find any concrete references to the fix or what causes the scrambling. Could someone point me in the right direction or pass along the details, in case my remote does get into this scrambled mode? Thanks much!

A 981 reset will clear all the settings (your setup code selections, key moves, macros, learned signals, etc.) and will clear the scrambled keyboard if you get that.

To do a 981 reset, press and hold P until the double blink, then release it and key in 981.

The scrambled keyboard will not happen at random during ordinary use. It is triggered by a certain pattern of reprogramming the remote's settings, that the designers of the remote probably thought was an attempt to reverse engineer the internal codes library. That pattern has occurred by accident when people try to search for the right setup code for a device, but once you have your right setup codes you wouldn't have any use that looks at all like that pattern.

As always these things are much easier with a JP1 cable, you can analyse a few learned signals and find or create the right setup code without the difficulty of the ordinary search (and you can back up all your settings to a PC and restore them easily after a 981 reset or other loss of settings). (And you could clear the keyboard scramble without doing a 981 reset, just be restoring settings from the PC).

Thanks much for the info. I'll probably end up getting the JP1 cable and trying out some of the advanced stuff. I've always loved fiddling with remote controls, so this is really looking like fun!
