I am having huge trouble getting individual sound field codes to work for my Sony receiver (STRDB-840)(ie:Radio Shack one-for-all won't learn them), can't even find a toggle function.
Have tries all the advanced codes in 0010, 0158,0159 group, and nothing - not even a toggle. Though the remote (15-2103) blinks like it's been learned. Am I pooched or is there a solution out there????

I have written a special protocol that will generate the correct signals for the Sony DSP commands, but you need JP1 and a JP1 remote to use it. The 15-2103 requires a hardware mod to be JP1 compatible, but the 15-2104 is ready to go (and is being given away at RS for $10 a pop right now, if there are any left).

Rob,

I believe I saw something about soldering in a recaptacle into the circuit board for my model.
If I get this accomplished and get the JP1 cord, how involved is it getting the softwae to upload the propper codes .... I'd be very interested in getting this done.

The software part is the easy part. If you solder in a JP1 header and build yourself or buy) a cable, I'll help you add the DSP protocol.

Thanks Rob ... I will let you know when I get my act together with all the needed pieces - in the process as we speak.

In the meantime I have found a bunch of Sony codes for soundfields that allegedly can go into a AFO Remote without JP1!
Trouble is no idea how tables work, from what I understand discrete codes can only be entered via a 3 digit number. The tables of numbers here have me confused.
I include the URL for your assesment.
Are discrete Sound Fields really possible without JP!?

You can use 3 digit codes (called EFCs or "Advanced codes") to create a single signal, but if you read that page more closely you will see that the DSP signals are made up of several different Sony signals. What my protocol does is create all that extra stuff for you.

These signals are too long for most learning remotes to learn properly, so the only reliable way to re-create them is with JP1. (Although you can also re-create them using hand edited hex with a Pronto)

Rob,

I now have a One-For-All 8781 remote with a big fat JP1 connector in the battery compartment, have also ordered a cable from HoveDirect.
Will keep you posted. Am hoping with your help can crack this thing.

Are you sure about that model number? Do you really mean URC-8780? Actually, it might be the same remote as the URC-8780 but in a different color, of so, where did you get it, this is an old discontinued remote.

Anyway, the good news is that we can still upgrade it. This remote uses a different processor than the modern remotes and someone else wrote the special protocol that works the Sony DSP for this one, but I think it still works.

I believe the 8781 is a silver version of the 8780,and that it is sold in RS in Canada.

Robman,

Edmund nailed it, that's exactly what it is, a silver version of the 8780. I bought it at Radio Shack up here in Canada.

Once the cable arrives, will this work?/

Like I said, I *think* so, but I didn't write the protocol that you'll need to use with this remote.
