I think it's time to move up to something with more memory.
I understand that the 2126 and the 8811 have the same capacity as the 1994.

I don't really want a touch screen remote but I'm not sure which to get. I'll need one with lots more memory than the 1994.

Any suggestions?

For lots more key move memory, get a JP1 cable so you can combine many of your key moves into device upgrades (which use a different section of memory and fit more) and/or install the (free software) extender so you can use your learning memory (which normally holds a small number of signals stored ineffitiently) to store key moves.

For LOTS more key move and macro memory (if you can solder well), get an 8811 and a larger capacity eeprom to replace the built in one, and JP1 and the extender. Solder on the new eeprom and follow software instructions in the JP1 group.

Almost no one needs more memory than the built-in amount on the 1994 if they use the JP1 resources well to make effective use of that memory.

Hi,
Thanks John
I already have a JP1 cable.
Where can I learn about combining the key moves into device upgrades. I have plenty of learning memory available.
Is there a specific FAQ or Readme that can help.
Same for the software extender.

Best Regards

Thanks guys,
I found the faq.
John, your extender says to get a copy of ExtInstall.zip, but I can't find this file. Can you point me to its location.

Cheers

Hey Ziad, I woould advise getting the hang of how JP1 works before jumping into the extender, you can always install it later there's no rush.

First things first, make yourself some upgrades that incorporate the EFCs that you currently have programmed as key moves.

Thanks Rob,
I've been using the JP1 and ir since the early days, but I've not gotten into the more advanced aspects.

I'll take your advice and start learning about the EFC upgrades.

Many Thanks

Rob,
Are you referring to the "Creating an Upgrade spreadsheet" in this faq:
[Link: hifi-remote.com]

So Do I understand this correctly, instead of having 30 keymoves programmed to control my Apex DVD, I can create a spreadsheet that has these EFC's mapped to keys and them make that a device code? This way the control is inherent and there would be no need to have keymoves for this device?

Cheers

The UI has been improved a lot since that faq was written, but the concepts are the same.

You may need a few Key Moves even when using a device upgrade, but most of your keys can be included in the upgrade.

My apologies then, your second post here gave me the impression that you didn't know much about JP1.

With the 15-1994 if you use VCR or CBL mode you can create a device upgrade that includes every normal button, except SURROUND. (By normal, I mean all the buttons except the device buttons, FAV/SCAN, and the smart keys).

If you need to program functions for your Apex onto any of the buttons not covered by the VCR mode, you will need to use either learning or key moves, although you can program the FAV/SCAN button using a "special protocol".

Once you have created device upgrades for any of your devices that need key moves or learning to complete the setup, if you still find you are running very short on memory it might well be time to start reading up on the 15-1994 extender, but you certainly should know how to create upgrades before you try installing the extender. It's the old "walk before you run" advice.
